Switching to Reef Crystals

Hi all,

I have been using Imagitarium Ocean Water (petco) up until now. It's adding up in price and effort lugging the boxes around. I purchased a rodi unit to hook up to my kitchen sink faucet. I also bought Reef Crystals from Instant Ocean. But I had read that when switching salts you should do it gradually. Once I get both and get a mix going, I was planning on doing about a 7 gallon water change. Do you think that is ok? Or should I do a lower amount of change? Thanks all!

Depends on how big the tank is.

I agree to just start doing normal water changes with your new salt mix

I found this during a search. How was switching from real saltwater to synthetic sw mix? Did you use RO water or treated tap water?

I'm in the opposite direction, used sw mix and RO water for decades, recently switched to Imagitarium real ocean water for a nano fish only tank (skimmerless).

When you used Imagitarium, any issues or nothing but good things about it? My only con so far is seems to only be about 4.5 gallons instead of 5.

The synthetic is supposed to be as close to real as possible with the exception that salt mixes often have elevated levels compared to real saltwater..

As corals like stability its important to look at the parameters of your existing water/salt mix and the new and if they are quite different then you should slowly transition to avoid abrupt spikes/dips in parameters.

Corals can adapt to different parameters but hate doing so rapidly..
