Swollen Head on Duncan

Came home tonight to find one of the heads on my little Duncans frag hugely swollen like a balloon and resembling a bubble coral in miniature. Then after a minute or two, it deflated again. I've never seen a Duncans do this before, ever- is this normal? However, I'm only a year into this hobby and I'm sure there are lots of things I haven't seen yet. It is fairly close to a gold hammer mounted higher up on the LR- perhaps it got stung and this is how it reacts? I would love to hear you LPS keepers' thoughts on this.

P.S. Sorry for the crappy phone pics.

Exactly - either ate some free floating food or something settled on it and it is trying to remove it.

Should be fine. In the past feed them has made them grow faster for me.

If they are bothered by something, then they tend to retract and close up. Looks like a feeding response. And yes, frequent feedings increase growth.

i turn off my pumps and pour a little mysis over my duncans once every couple of weeks. try it, they will ALL swell like the one in your picture. pretty fun to watch. i don't think its necessary to feed them and i don't do it often.

Feeding Duncan's

I feed mine my mysis shrimp, krill or reef roids, they will close up over the food, and will remain closed up depending on how big of a piece ya give them :frog:

The more often you feed them the faster they grow and so does your nitrates.

Thanks for all the replies! I've been away for a little while and now I come back to find I have 11 responses! Awesome. My Duncans seems to be doing fine- it has even grown a new head since it ballooned up
