Synofreaks 125g build thread

I thought I would start a thread, just to keep track of $$$$ and the process, basically for me, but join in if you like. 1st of all I'm a FW guy, with 2 self contained SW tanks running at the moment(120g and 55g). The 55 is being the upgrade tank. I'm selling all my FW stuff, and have netted some moola from sales. I've sold about $1300 worth, and have another $400-600 to go "hopefully". So here we go.
I decided to get a RR 125g to replace a non RR 125g. I've never plumbed a tank, but I'm gonna learn how. I got a new AGA 125g with dual overflows for $320, but PU was in Chitown so with gas it hit $360 and includes glass tops. Happy with the price. For the sump, I am using a 40g breeder($25 years ago) that was a fry growout from my cichlid breeding days. I wanted to use my 55, but only one I have is currently a running SW "coral propagation/LR tank".
For the stand I used a 125g "barebones" stand that already housed a 40g breeder beneath. So the skeleton was already in place. My house is very old and the stand was on concrete floor(very unlevel). So I needed to adjust leg heights and add a bottom panel to disperse the weight on my 1st floor(somewhat unlevel). Used a 6'x2'sheet of "shelving" material from menards. So I think I have $35 into the stands structure altogether. A pinch outta level, but not by much.
Now its time to wrap the stand. Oak plywood front and sanded plywood sides, oak trim all around. Cost in material was $110 and stain was $12. I went with Bombay mahogany, as it appeared darker than ebony. I cut 1 huge door, that would accomadate the 40g to slide in and out, and 1 smaller door. I used the cutout pieces to make 3 doors, all approximately 19"x24". Doors are done, but stand needs 1-2 more coats.
I decided on the MSX 200 skimmer($309), so time to baffle the sump. Glass was $$ I'm not happy with($30). I've got 3- 9.5" baffles from the entrance/skimmer section(13"x17") to the return section(11.5"x17"). The baffles are over/under/over. That left me with about 8"x17" for a fuge on the other side that is baffled with a 12" tall piece of glass.
Plumbing. As I've never plumbed a tank, I went the easy route.I had to go with Megaflow for the tank side. The overflows are 1.25" vinyl tubing(to sump). 1 goes directly down into a 3" PVC in the sump that has holes drilled near the bottom and is filled with rubble rock to reduce bubbles. The other is directly into the side. My 40g was convienently drilled at the top back right, and I used an extra bulkhead from the overflow(Megaflow) kit, to plumb it in. Reduced to a .75" pvc line that T's off with a ball valve to control flow to the Fuge side. The rest goes to the 3" pvc on the skimmer side. Plumbing parts are about $20 and the Megaflows hit me for $100.
For the return pump, I went with the Eheim 1262($140 shipped). Not a ton of flow, but will make up with Korilias in the tank. The return lines are 3/4" vinyl with a T to go to both returns.
Thats about it for now, and I will post some pics soon.

Well the stand is done, barring a seal coat for the inside of the doors.

. I am happy with the overall look. While I am a carpenter as my trade, I do concrete not trim LOL. Not bad for using a sawzall and a circular saw.
Heres a shot of the sump.

I think I got the pics backwards. Anyway the overflows go to the left skimmer section into a 3" PVC filled with RR and holes at bottom to reduce bubbles. The right side is the fuge with a ball valve to control flow/rest goes to skimmer section. The fuge pipe has holes drilled to help disperse flow(spray bar like). The middle is the return.
Next step is ATO and container for RO in the left door of the stand. I should have 22"x18"x18" for a container after the slide out bottom is made. I also will be starting the canopy with remaining oak ply.

Got the tank running about a week ago. I built 1 pillar so far with base rock. Didn't feel like pulling all the rock from the 55 to catch the damsel to start cycling, so I grabbed a few fish. Yellow checkered wrasse and a green zebra stripe goby($30 for both). Both are fine and eating 8 days later.
I purchased a T5 retro, so I decided it was time to start the canopy. Not quite enough wood leftover from stand to complete it. Dropped another $30 for hardware and wood, just completed 1st coat of stain. I got an IC 660, standoffs reflectors and bulbs for $180. For now I will run 2 x 60", 1 x 48", and 1 x 24" and see how it looks. All my rockwork and coral will probably be in the middle 4 feet, so no need for all 60" bulbs.
Might do the changeover today from the 55. Prolly gonna do 1 more large pillar and 1 smaller pillar. Will get pics as soon as I get the canopy on. BTW the skimmer has started doing its job. MSX 200 is pretty impressive so far.

Made the moveover yesterday. Went pretty smooth and took about 2 hours. Had to chisel a few LPS off some rock to go to the 120g.
Keeping this tank a bit more simple in structures and coral. Sticking with Zoos/palys, a few SPS, and a few LPS(pipe organ, isolated GSP, and open brains that my Flameback(120g) likes to snack on). 1 BTA will be added, hopefully my RBTA will split soon from my 120g.
I haven't got the T5's yet, so I mounted 2x32W overdriven T8's(which will probably stay), and used my 4x54W T5 fixture for the mean time. I decided to go with 3x80W T5 for the retro powered by an IC 660. That should put me at about 400W total when its done and said. I will run 2 aquablue, 1 acitnic for the T5, and 1 6500 and 1 50/50 for the T8. Hoping its a bit more blue then my 120g which has 3x80W 10K and 3x80W acitnic 03 which are not overdriven.
Stock is as follows: 1 F GS Maroon clown, 1 M Occelaris, 1 yellowtail damsel, 1 yellow checkerboard wrasse, and 1 green zebra stripe goby. Plan on adding a male bluejaw trigger and a orangeshoulder tang in which I will trade in when they get too big. That will be the final stock.
Still need to buy 1 or 2 more Korilias, an ATO, hood fans, 1reflector/encaps/standoffs/and 60" bulb, and a background(kicking myself for not painting the tank).
A pic is in order. I know the skull looks kinda cheesy, but gonna frag some Tubs blue and PHPE to start covering it. I think it will look sweet when they get a foothold.

And a shot of my self contained 120g to comare aquascaping.

Hope you all like =).

Well got a few more things accomplished. Got the background and canopy lid stands. Also got lighting on timers. I recieved my 2x80W retros with IC 660.
Lighting now consists of 2x80W T5 ATI Aquablue and a 54W 50/50 which is temorary. I had to wire in the 4' bulb so I didnt have to rewire ballast. I'll be getting 1 more 60" acitnic with reflector/endcaps and standoffs to run under the IC 660. I dropped another $10 on wire, electrical plug, and cheap T5 standoffs(for the 4' bulb). The ballast is down in the stand.
I decided to pull apart a cheap chinese T5 4x54W unit to wire in extra for the lid(front 6"). Wired that in, but only 3 bulbs are firing(prolly a bad ballast?) So I will run 2- 10K white and 1 50/50 in which are under a single reflector. Still have the OD T8's in the back with 1 50/50 and 1 6500. Might go to one 6500?When all lights are on, this tank is bright, and colors are popping.

Sorry for the glare, but all lights are on. Tank looks great in person. So heres what I need, and chime in if you have it.
1-2 more powerheads. 1 ATO unit. Fans for the hood. Snails. RO unit. And maybe some luck? 1st reef ready tank for me, so its a bit different then my 120g self contained reef. Thanks for looking and feel free to se my other post for free shrooms and other frags.

Thanks Tom. Well yet another update. Sold some more FW stuff, so got a bit more accomplished.
Lighting
Front to back
1x80W ATI aqua blue(tek 2)
1x54W Phillips 6500(no reflector)
powered by workhorse 7
2x54W 10K white(single reflector)
powered by chinese ballast
1x80W Geismann true acitnic(tek 2)
1x80W ATI aqua blue(Tek)
1x80W Geismann aqua blue(tek 2)
powered by IC660
Dropped another $200 on 2x80W with bulbs + an extra set of encaps/standoffs

Went with a newer chinese powerhead, similar to Korilias. Its a dual stream 1460 GPH. Hope it holds up. Spent almost $40, and now the sand is creating mountains.Like the flow, but might look intom locline 3/4" flow acceleators for the pump outputs.
Tank looks fairly natural, just need the PHPE and TUBBS to grow on that skull. Did the 1st water change, got rid of the "lid" brckets, as I need to open the canopy fullt to do H2o changes. Cleaned the skimmer for the 1st time, alotta gunk, gonna be a great skimmer for me.
All livestock is alive and well(put a baby BTA in, mine split again), and looks like its gonna be the conrolled reef I was looking for. The Orange shoulder tang, I thought might have a parasite(scratching), but its healing now and settling in.
Prolly not gonna get that Trigger.
Now to just get that ATO from Robtop, and I'll be 95% there.Comon Rob, dont let me down.
