T-5 question

I am upgrading to T5's on my 55 gal tank. What is a good combination of bulbs. I will have 6 bulbs, 8 if space is permitting.

I would say 3 actincs and 3 white 10k's....I only have 4 on my 55gal, 2 Actincs and 2 10K's white...but 6 would be awesome!

I have 4 over my 40 breeder.
1 - 12K
1 - 6K
1 - 450nm actinic
1 - 420nm actinic

There are a couple of pics up in my gallery. Brand and reflectors also play a really big part of how your lighting will come out. There were some posts by Squidd in the Lighing forum with a lot of info on t5s.

It all depends on what you are looking for. I have used about every combination of bulbs out there.

If you want high par values, the 6000K and 6500K are par monsters, the aquablue plus (around 10K) are not as high in par but much less yellow almost a blue tint, Then you have the antinic plus, the true actinic in 420 and 450nm, these are both very blue to almost purple.

I have been running with 6x54, 3x10k and 3x420 true actinic. The bulbs are not the best, made by some company called CA, look pretty generic. I decided to break down and try a new bulb configuration. I just purchased 6x54 Giesemann bulbs. 2x 6000k mid-day. 1x11k aqua blue plus, 2x pure actinic, and 1x actinic plus... I hope this gives me the growth rate needed for SPS, but tones down the yellows I have with my current set-up. I will keep you posted once they arrive....

Just an update,
My Giesemann bulbs came in yesterday, and all I can say is wow! My lighting looks 10xbetter than before, and my corals are better looking than ever. I am very please with this bulb arrangement.

This is my plan:

This is my plan:

ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus (or GE daylight)
ATI Aquablue (or GE daylight)
UVL Super Actinic
ATI Blue Plus

pyle02, what type of fixture do you have? (make/model).

I'm planning to upgrade to 75g by spring, and I'm looking at some of the 8 bulb configs, but may just settle for 6 if that is more than enough.

How cool/hot do T5's run?

Doomican,
Actually I purchased a unit from ebay online store. The set up with bulbs(cheap) was about 280.00. The fans have already crapped out, so I cut the wires and only use a 6" fan I pruchased from Target that blows on the surface. I keep glass over top the lit area of the tank to decrease splash. I keep my indoor temp at 75, and no heat issues at all, tank stays around 78-79. Despite the inexpensive ballast, it contains ind. reflectors, and again, no heat issues. My corals are lovin it. Make sure and purchase quality bulbs, as that makes all the difference.

BTW,
Doomican, what type of corals do you plan on keeping when you do your upgrade? I think an 8 bulb set-up may be a bit much, even for clams/ sps. Also, it depends on the fixture. I have heard that a 4x54 tek t5 w/ ind. reflectors will give the same output as 6 or even 8 bulbs w/o. If I had to do it all over again, I would say tek all the way. I think for a 75, 6x54 tek t5 fixture will be more than plenty of light. My 2 cents....

the ati or aquascience bulbs are what you want. sorry geisemann users but I had geisemann and they don't last and they look pink after only a few short months.
I am running ati now and the color is great to me. I no longer need actinics I only run the actinic plus and the 12k . I only have 4 rows of t5 and no other light on a 31 inch deep tank. neon green birdsnest stuck in the sand growing like crazy and brightly colored. stags on the bottom also doing well. keeping your water clean will allow you to use your light more efficiently.
