T-5 Tek Lights And Clams

Well, it was suppose to be a Squamosa, that is what the LFS said it was. I am no clam expert so I took their word for it. I was going to take it back but it seems that I got a pretty darn good deal. I am getting a larger tank in the near future so I don't think this will be a problem. If it gets way too big then we can just eat it I guess...

Deffinitely a gigas

The incurent siphon is gapeing a bit IMO and ifit keeps that up for more than a few days you will want to try and figure out the cause. Gigas is probably the best clam because they are the deepest water clams, it can grow almost half an inch a month and at four inches in a year it might be 10" and in two it could be 16" and by the time its too big for your tank I would recomend selling it for a fantasticly larger sum of money than you paid and buying two gigas clams to replace it. Be sure to dose phyto because this clam does require some, and keep doseing kalkwasser or something similar to help offset that pulled from the water by this animal.

a 24" bulb and a 36" bulb especially in the T5's case, will not put out the same intensity. Although you seem to be ignorant to Ti's references. The additional wattage is what allows the bulb to burn brighter, although it won't be noticable to our eyes, it will more than likely put out more light and lumens.

Regardless, all T5's will do clams well and I think your 24" will do just fine.

I'm not ignorant to Grim reafers T-5 posts in fact I looked through all 40 pages and them some to find the particular post about the par readings. Anyways I hope this guy likes the light he's in and if not I guess I could move him a up on the rocks...thanks and take care SCI

It's not gaping. Gigas (and crocea) regularly open their inhalent siphons wide. It is only a sign of trouble if the clam fails to extend its mantle, too.

I don't get the glimmer that you get with your halides but other than that they are super freeaking bright. The other good thing about them though is that I don't have to get a chiller or shell extra cash for my electricity bill every month (trying to keep it below $200). I do like the halides don't get me wrong, they are proven and look stunning. I just think the T-5's are well suited for me, cheap to run and replace, great color and super bright. It's all a matter of opinion. Some say T-5's are better others say Halides. whatever makes you happy I say. Take care and keep on reefin'...

Strom, just for the sake of argument people said that PC's were great in the beginning also. I believe that T5's are much better, but they aren't that much cooler. They need to be closer to the surface than a MH to maintain they're par at depth. As far as cost replacing 4, 6 or 8 bulbs @ 15-20 bucks apiece isn't any cheaper. Now is when you say they can last 14-18 months. The problem is after 9 months they strat dropping they're par fairly quickly. I think for the smaller tanks the coralife pendants are perfect. They cost about 240-250 the bulb lasts a year and the par is comparable to a 175w MH.

why would it matter in the summertime?

My house stays cool all year long, if I want I can also increase the temperature within my house, its called air conditioning. I keep it around 69 degrees in the winter and 71-73 in the summer. It works great and I never have heat issues with my tank especially since these Tek lights I have put off almost no heat, I put my hand under the lights and I feel no heat coming off of them thus I feel they put off little to no heat. My PC's I upgraded from put off way more heat than these IMO. I think I will be fine I bet you can do the same in your house as well... take care.
