T. Squamosa q's

I'm looking into getting one of these due to their hardy reputation, and lower level lighting requirements, nitrate reduction possabilities, and because they are just plain cool-- and have a few "clam newbie" questions.

I have a very large, flat "shelf" rock that is on the upper 1/3 of my tank, horizontal. Nothing else around it (within stinging distance to the clam). Could I put a layer of sand on top the rock, and then put the clam there? (assuming it's secure) 90 gallon tank, 18 gallon sump.

Will the clam really squirt my lights when it snaps shut if it's placed high enough?
Anyone actually have this happen?
Anyone name their clam "Squirt" because of the incident?

Lighting are 4 T5's: 1 10k daylight, 2 actinics, 1 fiji purple. Should I throw another 10k on there? If I can have the clam on the shelf rock, it will be positioned directly under the 10k.

Would a Squamosa, approximately 10" under the lights do ok? I read through all the recent threads onthe clam forum and haven't seen alot on squa.

Thanks for the help. I don't want to put anything into my tank that I can't keep "fat and happy".

Ok last question:Anyone ever think about stick there finger in it? C'mon....let's be honest here.

H2O
90 gallon
25% weekly water changes
dkh 9 to 14
calcium 450 to 475
79 degrees
20 nitrate (I'm working on getting it down, but wouldn't the clam favor this level of nitrates?)
1.025

THanks!!!!!

.....nitrate reduction .......

one clam will make an undetectable change in nitrates, they don't actually need that much.

sure, but only he will decide if he stays put.

don't know for sure if yours will, gigas clams are more prone to this behaviour but ......

yes my gigas did it when in QT ( shallow water )

no, gigas khan

he should be fine, i would add another 10K, i like to give them lots of light. just because they 'can' survive under lesser lighting conditions doesn't mean they have to, they are still photosynthetic.

no and when you see the pics of what happens to a curious fish you wont want to either :)

while clams need nitrates ( all organisms do at some level ) they and other invertebrates cant tolerate high levels, i would try to get this under control first as the clam wont help.

also the CBB and puffer fish can be a problem for clams and you may want to reconsider adding a clam that may only end up as dinner. the CBB has been know to nip at clam mantles and the puffer fish may us the clams shell to grind his teeth, both will turn out very badly for the clam.

My squamosa will shoot water all over my floor when it decides to move. I only have a 10 inch deep tank though and he is around 18-20 plus inches so I would not worry about it shooting the lights in a 90gl tank. good luck

****.. sorry. did they kill those fishes. darn..

i am thinking about one of these. how big do they get in tank.

I would put the squamosa lower in the tank, to be honest. They don't require a lot of light (compared to other clams) and would probably do better on the sand bed.
