T5 Growth Pics

If you paid for the shield, I would make sure and get it smokez01. I'd use it to guard my endcaps by cutting a 2" - 3" strip for both sides and slide it over the endcaps. Protect the endcaps and keep the full strength of the bulb, best of bost worlds when you are using the fixtures.

Horace, how are the new UV SA bulbs? Haven't heard anything from you yet.

Thats a great idea. I defiantly would not run them completely bare.

WOW, that is some nice pictures of your coral Newschool04, by the way how high is your light from your tank?

First of all, wanted to say hello to everybody here. I have been following this thread for a while. I have a 4x24 tek light coming in the mail soon for my 20H. I have been undecided about light combos. My tank has mainly lps, zoos at the moment.

I was thinking of running this combo, however I want something to pop out greens also. ( I am looking for a slightest bluish look, with enough par for growth) ( I might venture into sps in the future)

1.aquablue special
2.blue plus
3.sun pro
4.blue plus

I wanted to get a really good brand bulbs for my first set. I see several brands talked about here, so that makes this decision even harder.

I purchased a cheap pair of 2x24 1 reflector style t5 fixtures , before for a total of 4x24, but these have just been keeping my corals alive.

I am super excited to be jumping on this t5 train and any help would be great.

Julian

I hate to tell you this but if your expecting your LPS/Zoos to be super happy under your new lights your going to be dissapointed. LPS and some Zoos do not react kindly to T5 at all. It took my frogspawns a heck of a long time to adjust to them unfortunatly. T5 are good for one thing...SPS. While you can sucessfully have other corals in the tank (I DO), they just arent as happy as they would be under something else like VHO or MH. IMO T5 are one of the hardest light setups to get right.....They even have thier issues with SPS (they bring out pastel colors rather than rich) which is why I am switching to MH.

If you want to pop greens use a Pure actinic or actinic blue(ATI Brand name) in your mix. For LPS and zoos I wouldn;'t worry about having enough PAR so I'd go with the sun, 2 blue plus and an actinic. If you want a more white look try 2 aquablues a Blueplus and actinic.

Thanks grim thats what I was wondering about. I didnt know if i should get an actinic, but that clears it up.

One more question, Is ATI and giesemann the same company? I know that if they are'nt that they are both german made.

Should I go ATI bulbs all the way? I have heard that the GE sun bulb is good.

If i use the
1.sun bulb
2.blueplus
1.actinic

in my setup, is it going to give a more yellow appearance than if i used......

2 aquablues
1 blueplus
1 actinic

First mix will be more blue. Despite the name aquablues are a very crisp white with just a hint of blue.

At one time ATI and D&D were getting thier lamps from Narva. ATI and Narva had a parting of the ways and D&D got into be with Guesemann some how. The last D&D lamps I got came in boxed labeled Guesemann(or how ever you spell it). I have ATI and D&D lamps here and they are definatly different.

I love them, the dual 400w SE's got basement banned after I recieved this hood. Now onto the pics.

All before pics (Except for the softies) were taken late 05 (October-December), the after are in May of 06.

T5's FTW!!!!!!!

horace, regarding your catagorical statement:

"I hate to tell you this but if your expecting your LPS/Zoos to be super happy under your new lights your going to be dissapointed. LPS and some Zoos do not react kindly to T5 at all."

Have you seen this months Tank of the Month?

would you care to revise your opinion???

:D

its amazing how much we have yet to learn. and mostly, we should try and avoid blanket statements as it doesnt help ourselves or fellow reefers.

I never intended this thread to be a T5's are good, bad, not powerful enough, too much power, etc. Growth pics and good info either pro or con on T5's was what I was going for. As with any lights, people have had success and failure with all of them.

Let's keep it cool and hopefully get some more growth pics, success stories and maybe some disasters also. It happens with all lights, not just the T5's.

Nice examples god910 and sjm!
I've got a similiar ocean of zoo:
