T5 question

Thinking about going to a 4x5ft T5 for my 180. Was wondering what ballest people think would be best. I do not need or want to over drive these. This would be a retrofit. Currently running 6x3ft with two workhorse ballest.

What are you planning on keeping in this tank? 4xT5 is very on the light side for a 24" deep tank. The usual recommended number is one light for every 3", so 8 for your tank. That is not to say you cant do less. I saw a 120 (same depth, just 2 feet shorter) with a 4X fixture. had all low light corals.

The 5 foot length makes it harder without overdriveing the bulbs ,imo. But understand your not interested in doing that and I dont blame you.

I might be entirely wrong but, I dont think they make a 5 foot bulb thats less than 80 watts, whitch would be overdriven.
54 watter's only come in 4' lengths.

So the only option I can think of is using a combo of 2&3 lengths whitch have alot less output at 39 watts for the 3 footers and less for the 2's.
Im thinking these would not penetrate 24" very well.
Jmo though.

Mark I'm redoing the lighting on my 180 and will be using 4 5' bulbs driven by an IC660 along with 3 6' led runs for actinic for my mixed tank. Even if you overdrive the 4 5' ones on your tank you'll only be able to sps thrive from the middle of the tank up. 4 bulbs limits you a bit on color selection too. I had 6 4' on my 120 with 4 overdriven on the 660 and 2 on advance ballast and had great color and decent growth. What are you planning for the tank?

Walt could you put all 4 bulbs on the 660?
This is an LPS tank. So not worried about the par. Actually one of my ballest went so been running three bulbs on the 180 for about six months. The rose seems fine...just wanted to get it going so I can put some of my high end zoas in...

Mark,
They overdrive at ~100-110W per bulb, so you should be able to run the 4 of them and be below the 440W total for the 660 ballast.
