t5 red light

Whooa there, your on the complete opposite end of the light spectrum. Red light is the first wavelenght of light to get "flitered" out by water. Corals and most photosynthesis does not occur in the "red" light of the spectrum. Most photosynthesis occurs between 540-450nm of wavelenght with certian spikes of spectrum up to 700nm. Now red light starts I believe (going off of memory) 650nm and up. Strictly red light will do nothing for the corals.

opinion use t5 red light in sps

Yeah, for what? If I'm right, the only thing red light is for, is to view the tank in darkness, but most use moonlights for that. Plus moonlights are supposed to be benificial.

If im not mistaken some japanese reefers use a little bit of red spectrum and it is suppose to brighten up red and pink sps corals like pocilipora (sp) birdsnest, red tables?

Ive seen a few tanks with red T-5's and most of them have red MH spotlights.

Got pics? Links?

It's a dumb rule anyway. I was actually thinking about a pic of an actuall tank that's useing red.

That is over a tank, unfortunatley you cant even tell by the tank pics theres red there but i'll go back and look for the FTS with the red bulbs for ya.

there was a totm either here or on another board that used a red T5 to enhance colors. Yes, a lot of red is filtered out but it's very affective at the same time.

there are also a lot of acropora which spend hours exposed to the sun, certainly getting some red spectrum then.

There was an LFS here somewhere in S FL, that used one of those high wattage small halogen lightbulbs, looked like a flashlight reflector sized bulb, about 2" across, with a red lens. It was an awesome effect. Really brought out the colors.

many of the amazing japanese reef tank have red lights on sps corals and I don't think it is for the look of the red color. It gives some of those acro's amazing color. The lights have recently become availible here in the U.S. in t-5 and other bulbs. There used to photos of a bunch of tanks here on rc.
