T5 vs MH.....

I can't make sense of some of the info i have been reading about T5. From what I am reading T5 is as good if not better. I understand the heat issue with MH. How high should the MH be above the water line and/ or a glass cover? Any input would be appreciated. I would like to have a carpet and maybe some sps.

I guess it would depend on individual fixture/reflector and the depth/foot print of your tank. Also practical factor is like heat and space is to be factored in too. Typically most tanks would have 8-12" between the waterline and the glass cover.

Thanks. When I said glass cover I should have been more specific. My question is would the height above the water line be less if you placed a glass cover on the aquarium?
