T5

do T5's require anything different in the way of powering too T8's. I have a 28g with fittings for two T8's and I was wondering if I could install T5's straight away?

Unless the T8s are using an electronic ( such as a workhorse ballast ) that will also power T5 HO bulbs the ballast is likely not going to light them properly. If the ballast doesn't have the ansi code listed on it to run a T5 HO and you try it, while it may actually light the bulb is will not likely provide the full high output light from the T5.

I also believe the pins are different widths on purpose to prevent trying to use with T8 endcaps so that would need to be replaced too.

Lastly, what makes T5s so great is the ability to use individual parabolic reflectors. Trying to use without that will also reduce the amount of output considerably.

Best to just start over with the right equipment.

T5 lamps are generally 2 inches shorter than T8 lamps. The closest T5 lengths to your aquarium size are 22” and 34” lengths. They are not pin-compatible with T8 lamps and require different sockets. The ballasts that drive your T8 may be sufficient for normal output T5 lamps but may not be sufficient for T5HO (high output) lamps.

A T6 lamp will be plug-compatible with a T8 fixture. T6 lamps are available from www.naturallighting.com with 24” and 36” lengths. While normal output (NO) T8 ballasts can drive a T6, you may need to upgrade the ballasts to drive T6HO lamps to their full potential. The calculator at www.fulham.com can help you determine if new ballasts are needed.

Both T5 and T6 lamps use similar parabolic reflectors. Their narrow diameters and linear design make them ideal for use with reflectors.
