T5 problems that some think they have?

dieselab, nice looks healthy. What kinda sand is that? Aragalive? Looks very clean. How old is the sytem?

The system is about 6 months old. The brand of sand I believe is bio-activ live aragonite.
I wil try to take more pictures.

Dudes, it's official I am now an official spoke person for ARAGALIVE. I have seen too many systems do really well with that stuff. I had one myself & silly me thought that I needed to go bigger. So I dumped less of it in a larger space, instead of spending the extra cash.

Thankyou Ti,

We have been in this conversation for what 3 months now?

I can't tell you how many threads I have read that took 2-3 hours to get up to speed.

No offense RedEyeReef, but this thread has come a long long way, too far to summarize in a few minutes.

Ok - this is really bad... I am thinking about buying some halides to put over my 55(for my SPS) and move my t5s(which I love) to my 90 FOWLR... because I am too lazy to order and replace the PC bulbs on the 90, which are long over due....

Isn't that terrible?

Wow...

I never used to be this lazy.

The only reason I am not going to is that my yellow watchman goby looks so good under the t5s and the fixture is kind of heavy...

One thing I have noticed with halides is the coloring of corals can be a little directional. If I look at the frogspawn from different angles it can look anywhere from sorta beige to bright green. I get my PAR meter back today (again) so it is time to do some T6 experiments. I have an actinic combo and a daylight I am thinking about adding to the halide fixture and then switching to 20K lamps to see what that does for the color. Also have some nasty bright 105 watt T5 actinics to try if that doesn't work. Options, gotta love it:D

If the VHO T6'6 EVER make it to market they should be sweet. These are 6 foot 165 watt monsters that had a ton of PAR without using a reflector. I am thinking 2 could be enough to provide a majority of PAR my tank needs and the 20K halides will add just enough to make sure. We'll see.

You can get the Normal Output T6 through Big Al's online. The lamps I have are pre production models of the VHO T6 that will hit the market soon.

Wow, so now we have folks like FastUno who have moved over to the Dark Side (MH)... just as my Tek T5 hood has just arrived! Well I'll stick with the T5s and try 'em out, I'm starting a new 90g I really didn't have a choice with the canopy I have...and was looking for lower heat output and perhaps lower energy costs.

I've been using halides for a few months and I still am not completly happy with them as far as the color goes. The T5's will do good for you.

Don't worry about Uno, He's just a typical disgruntaled New Yorker so his opinion don't count:D

This thread has been a great learning experience and a pleasure to read, a lot of characters have emerged. Thanks for the feedback Grim, I'm staying with the T5s, just lit them up and wow I'm impressed. One thing that is certain is that this is a hobby for all of us and there are multiple ways to skin a cat, some perhaps better than others but it's all about experimenting and learning from others.

And don't forget about FastUno getting rid of his camera that took perfectly awesome pictures!! I think he just likes to mix things up every once in awhile.
