I have a "black" ballast...I am running VHO's and want to upgrades to t5s.

The ballast stickers are all gone and the only thing that I know is that it will run 4-48" VHO's. I am only running 36's as my tank will not take 48's.

If I get new end caps will my current ballast run the t5's. Does anyone know? i know it is hard so say with out a brand....

Should I just get a ballast that will run 2 t-5s to supplement my current bulbs? Any thoughts?

I have never used a lot of fluorescent lighting so i dont know the answer. Of course adding a ballast and t-5 supplement will work. Just thought I would reply to keep you up top and maybe someone will come along that can help you.

As T5 and T12 are run by essentially the same method, yes it should burn T5's, also. Although, I wouldn't recommend it. I'd recommend a Fulham Workhorse 7. It's no IceCap, but at less than $50 they are great ballasts.

Operates:
# 4 X 39W T5HO Linear
# 3 or 4 X 54W T5HO Linear
# 2 X 80W T5HO Linear
# 1 X T12VHO: F48/F60/F72/F96

I'm 95% sure exactly what type of ballast you have. I believe it's an old Current, we used a few at the LFS I used to work at. Kind of a rectangle shape with rounded edges? Really heavy? About 1.5' by 5" ?

That's the ballast...I have had it quite awhile.

Thanks for the info (and for keeping me on top) !

Do you still live in Auburn?

If you are going to get T5's, I highly recommend Hello Lights. Great customer service and fast shipping. I purchased the Retro Fit Kits, I found them to be an incredible deal.IMHO.
