"tagging along"

If someone bumps a thread, they are looking for more input on the subject. Instead of starting a new thread, a bump can accomplish the same thing. Maybe that thread is 2 years old, but there are new people on the board with new thoughts and ideas that may not know that thread was there.

It really boils down to if you (the person complaining about the bumps) are no longer interested in that thread, unsubscribe from it and you won't get an email. If your just to lazy to unsubscribe from a thread, then you deserve the email notification to a 'bump' response. But don't **** and moan about it. :)

Is that 2 seconds to get to a thread and realize it was bumped really a problem?

Bumping and tagging increase post count. There would be less of each if those didn't contribute to post counts.

Shouldn't this be in the Feedback and Questions forum?

I can't imagine a more appropriate place than "New to the hobby" and thus new to RC.

I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want to get into sociology, but ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“tagging alongââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ is a carryover of normal and expected human [conversation] behavior. Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s generally considered rude to ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“secretlyââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ listen in on peoples conversation thus the ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“needââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ for people to be polite in their interest of someone elseââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s conversation. Think of ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“tagging alongââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ as the real person to person conversation equivalent of ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“Hello, Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m Joe and I couldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t help but overhear what you were sayingââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦ Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d like to hear more.ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ Yes, you have nothing to offer the conversation, however subconsciously you feel the need to tell others that you are listening. The internet is quickly changing our culture ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ pretty soon weââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll have people pulling seats over to our dinner tables to listen in on our conversations without so much as an excuse me.:worried:

Except since the inception of message boards it has been called "Lurking" and is acceptable as it is considered a "Public Forum" and not a "private conversation"

You are taught (or should) manners long before you start surfing the message boards is my point. And it is subconscious after all.

So aww lurking is bad manners?
Seems it would put a lot of useless messages on the boards if everyone was polite enough to post "Just Tagging Along" just because they were following a thread? :)

Would make a neat experiment all the same if everyone that was reading a particular thread would post "Tagging Along"

I don't think the point was that lurking was rude, it was that saying "just tagging along" is not rude. He was pointing out where that impulse for being polite may come from (from a sociological perspective).

In our ongoing effort to continually improve Reef Central, the RC Staff would like to encourage everyone not to reply to threads with ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œJust Tagging Alongââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ or other noncontributory comments. These kinds of replies are discourteous to the others who are subscribed to that thread as this causes them to reopen threads that have no useful additional information. It also makes it difficult for the moderators and Team RC members to find threads with no replies thus not serving the thread originator. If you want to follow a thread of interest, please use the ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œsubscribe to this threadââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ link below the quick reply box. The effect will be the same. You can easily track the thread of interest in the subscribed threads section of your ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œMy RCââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ page.

Ok. Since the topic is going in the direction of continually changing and advancing to fit in with internet subculture I would like for everyone to take a deep breath and consider social bookmarking as opposed to private bookmarking.
If for instance I like the advice or particular way a member of the boards answers a question or sheds light on a particular topic I may be interested in reading more of what that person has to say. Example:
I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want to get into sociology, but ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“tagging alongââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ is a carryover of normal and expected human [conversation] behavior. I think this is a good comment and would like to hear some more thoughts by this person. I can get here pretty easy.

Now as far as I know there is no way for me to find out which of those reply's are on subscribed threads or just passing comments. Can I find out who is subscribed to my threads?

I guess I would rather see a Mod reply to a "Tagging Along" comment by asking "Why did you post that? What does Tagging Along mean to you? For what purpose are you chosing to use a two word reply? " or something to that nature, rather than the canned response.

To grow and change for the better as the wealth of information grows is a good thing, to stand in the same spot and be opposed to change stunts this growth.

I see there is a sticky at the top of the forums saying there is going to be some reorginization of these board. Good. I look forward to this not because I belive that the system is broken, but because that means Team RC is growing and changing in a positive manner. I hope that continues as long as I am a member.

Any thing I say is only my opinion.

Nice post, but where does the "here" take you? I tried it and got a "temporarily disabled due to high server load" message. I feel like I'm missing the one thing that will make my corals grow better :) Help!!!!

Jack

Here takes you to a advance search page where you are able to see every post that a person has made. It won't work right now for you cause you aint paid up :).
Without a doubt supporting RC and having access to the search engine is THE BEST $$$$ YOU CAN SPEND ON YOUR CORALS :).
