Tamron 90mm - Pull the trigger?

Go with this lens or another? I plan on photographing corals, people, everything. I like to take my camera with me whenever I can.

I have always wanted a nice macro lens and I have steered towards this one. I want to make sure it is useful in other areas besides macro.

It's a nice sharp lens and yes it can be used as a standard 90mm lens, not just macro. The only issue with it is that the barrel extends during focusing, which can be a pain. It's not a big deal with flowers, bugs, etc but when you're up against the glass on your tank it's a hassle.

What camera? If you have a Canon dSLR, the Canon 100mm might be a better choice. But, with Nikon, the Tamron is a good price-performance lens.

I use a nikon D40.

Do other lenses not extent out as much and are better for taking pictures of my reef?

The Nikon 105VR is an internal focus lens and won't extend. The other 100mm range third part macros (Sigma and Tokina) do extend. But, the Nikon costs nearly double the others and doesn't offer a better IQ since all of these macros have excellent IQ. There are ways to work with the lens extension but it is a little annoying.

EDIT: If you get the new release of the Tamron, it will AF on the D40. As will the Nikon 105.

You can also save money by buying the non-VR version of the Nikon 105. Macro work is best done on a tripod so the VR doesn't really matter.

If I was spending my money, I'd get the Tamron. If I were spending your money, I'd go for the Nikon.

I think you can still get the $60 rebate. Around $389 after rebate at B&h,Adorama, or Buydig.
