Tang Combinations

Yes. He showed aggressions to my atlantic blue tang and my purple tang. In one instance i had to place him in the sump for a few days and on the second instance the rockwork had to be redone. After doing these things the aggression stopped. Thats just my personal experience though, some browns may be model citizens and others may be evil lol.

Here's my combination in a 210 display with 75 sump.

Is that a pair of purples with a desjardini? If so impressive.....and people worry about the powder brown being the aggressor in that bunch. You must have added them all together at the same time.

My experience has been that sailfins are beeped beeps. So I would only keep one in any tank. Even though I love them to death; especially purples.

Very nice aquarium John. What size is it? Thanks for the compliments guys. Actually, they were all introduced seperate! Ive had the most trouble with the brown in regards to adding tangs after it. Im a firm believer in if you feed them well they are not as aggressive/territorial because theres no shortage of food. The sailfin is actually super peaceful. The "jerk" of the tang group would be the Atlantic Blue Tang (the larger one that looks like a purple tang). I have tons of current and feed 2-3 sheets of nori a day plus frozen food. For Nori I use the walmart brand that you find in the Oriental isle... $2.50 for a 20 sheet pack! Ill post some more photos shortly... id love to see more peoples photos aswell:)

This is the Atlantic Blue Tang, he still has his subadult colors but when he's mature he'll be a deep blue color.

Naso with sailfin, probably the 2 most peaceful tangs of the group.

Hippo, brown, and yellow grubbing on some Nori

The newest addition to the tangs is the Purple Tang, he's been with me for about a month. The brown beat him up when introduced so I had to drastically reaquascape to what you see now. After aquascaping the brown completely left him alone.

Lastly, heres a photo of the full setup

8x2x2 240.
And thank you. :)

Based on what has been offered up so far on this thread (obviously opinions vary)...

Blue Tang
Yellow Tang
Sailfin Tang
Kole Tang
Naso Tang

How does that suit you all?

Im not 100% sure because ive never kept track of odds/evens but i believe that may be more towards keeping the same type for example a purple tang and yellow tang.. in that case you may want odds to disperse aggressions

Tang Combinations

The 5 hippos, 4 yellow, 1 sailfin, 1 purple and 1 clown have been in this 150G for about 6 mos, had a 5 yellow (6" plus) had to take him out he was aggressive. As long as you have filtration to keep up with the mess they make, and are prepared to remove them, if they get aggressive, or too big for the tank, not sure there is too much. My fish are all fat, and over fed, the NO3 RX keeps NO3 @ < 2.5ppm, the GFO keeps PO4 < .25 (currently at .06).

My experience over the years is pretty much spot on with others when they state the issues encountered with Powder Blue and Powder Brown tangs in the same tank. I downsized from a 300 gallon years ago that contained a Powder Blue, Powder Brown( like an idiot I just had to have it) and an Achiles tang. I would never do Powder tangs Blue or Brown ever again. I really agree with others who state that having the number of tangs you would like in a 180 is pushing it as well. I think you would be fine though with 2 smaller tangs like a Purple and maybe a Yellow Eye. As you are probably aware, tangs are heavy grazers so plan accordingly and best of luck.
