Tang Compatibility

Would it be OK to add a Naso Tang and Powder Blue Tang into my 215 Gallon tank which already has a Sohal Tang, Purple Tang, Yellow Tang and Blue Hippo Tang. Both the Naso and Powder Blue are 2.5 times large than any of the other fish?

Thanks

IMO you are at your tang limit, and actually over it with the Sohal, so I wouldn't be adding any more tangs, don't think the sohal would take too kindly to the new additions.

You don't want to cram tangs together. That would lead to more aggression than there needs to be. The sohal tang is one of the most aggressive tangs that is known to kill other fish. The powder blue is also a tang that is aggressive. That would not be a good mix, eventually the sohal would be overall ruler of the tank. I would wait until you get a larger tank before you consider any more tangs.

Larger Tank

Larger Tank

I am currently in the market for a larger tank. Something between 300 to 600 gallons. I would think that would be large enough right?

For all of them, minus the sohal, they are just so darn mean, and it only gets worse the older they get.

If you get a 600 gallon tank, I think you would be good. The size would hopefully allow enough room for each fish to retreat to an area to escape aggression. This is assuming you don't do a tall tank. For tangs you want as big of a foot print as you are allowed. This for two reasons, 1) More room for territories 2) Larger surface area meaning more oxygen exchange, this means your tangs will be able to breathe very well.

Todd- Are you saying the sohal is mean or the rest of them are? I am somewhat confused, but I am assuming you mean the sohal.

I ask this question because I have seen other people have all these tangs plus an Achilles in the same tank and not report any issues.
This is why I enjoy this forum, so we can have a place to talk about disasters that have happen when you mixed the wrong fish.
Todd, I am also confused on what you are looking to say. I also assume you are referring to the Sohal
Thanks for the input.

I agree the Sohal maybe small now but it could turn into a devil fish at any time. I had a sohal that did just that.

Here they are!!

Here they are!!

The Sohal is not currently in the same 180 tank. I currently have the Powder Blue, Naso, Yellow, Sailfin, Coral Beauty, Flame Angel, 6 line Wrasse, Carpenter Wrasse, and Red Hawk all in the 180.

Hi, i just want to add my two cents. there are tons of people who've tried what you're about to try, and some of them get away in the short term. it helps for you to ask how long those tangs have been together in the same tank. just because someone has success in months or even a couple of years, it doesn't mean it's going to last a lifetime. most marine fish, in particular angels and tangs, can completely change their behaviors when they mature, which can take a couple of years (read first sticky in the fish-only forum). as a result, success in mixing species that should not be mixed can only be determined once those fish reach maturity and display zero aggression towards each other. so far, there have been very few exceptions from the norm in a typical home aquarium, even a large one. mother nature almost always dominates at the end of the day.

we all want to see all the fish we like in the same tank, for our own guilty pleasure. however, please just pause and think for a second about what you are about to do. if you have doubts (which you obviously do, otherwise you wouldn't be asking), then think hard about your decision and have back up plans when things don't work out. i once kept multiple angels in the same tank, and to be honest with you, even though i loved all those fish, eventually all the aggressions and chasing just destroyed the supposedly nice scene of a home aquarium. i got tired of seeing my weaker fish getting chased here and there. my aquarium now has zero aggression (well except when one fish happens to get into the other's way and annoys it) and i love the peacefulness.

i have a french angel, a pair of naso tangs, powder blue tang, flame angel, christmas wrasse, redhead solon fairy wrasse, and a pair of clowns.

the male naso tang is already 7.5" and the tank is starting to look a little small. when it hits 10" i think i'll need to build the 450 gallon that i've been thinking about.

i just re-read this thread and saw that you're getting a 300-600 gallon tank. in that case, i think it may be ok if you are careful with the stocking order. naso should go in first, then yellow and hippo, then powder blue and purple. sohal should be the last. of course, this will depend on what the actual "personalities" of your fish are. i've had a 6" adult powder blue that was peaceful like a baby, and also a 2.5" juvie that attacked every new additions, including a large 7" emperor angel.
