tang growth?

I just picked up a purple tang for my soon to come 300. I have him in a refuge tank now and he is only about 1.5". I have a sailfin and a yellow tang in my display now, the yellow is about 3 to 4" and the sailfin is 4 to 5". how fast can i expect my purple to grow under heavy feedings? I have crabs in the refuge to help clean up what he does not eat. How big should I let him get before I add him in with the other two? I plan on adding them to the 300 at the same time with a naso, a kole, powder brown and a few others tbd.

I had the same question for my 2.5" Purple Tang several weeks ago. I didn't get a huge response but I also didn't realize that he had already grown. In roughly ten weeks he grew from 2.5" to 3"! I feel it's due to the heavy feedings and his huge appetite. He's very thick too, gorgeous fish.

Thanks for the info Amanda, you would think more people would have some experience with this subject. I hope I can get that kinda of growth or more if I am lucky, He has alot of catching up to do.

That is like asking how fast a child will grow. Each and every child(fish) is different. I have had a powder brown that is a runt. He is no where near full grown yet he is lucky if he has grown 3/4" in the 15 months that I have had him. It is not a lack of feeding or poor water quality. They(my fish) get fed about 4 times a day on average.

they do vary. Few examples. Red sea sailfin 5" 3 yrs later 12".
Sailfin 3" 5 yrs later 10". The best story of all vlamingi 4" 1.5 yrs later 10" and counting.
They are all heavily feed.

I understand that growth between each fish may differ. my real concern is I am going to be transfering everything from my 150 and my 110 into my new 300 and that includes my 5" sailfin, I do not want him to kill my little purple. I have been looking for quite sometime for a 3-4" purple locally and they are just not available, with that being the case all I can do is hope the little guy grows fast. I was only hoping to get an idea as to how long I will have to wait to introduce the tangs into my new and tank and how big the purple will need to be to live in the same tank as my sailfin.

I can't imagine how much food you go thru when you heavily feed Thor...:eek1: Your tank is amazing. Very inspirational:cool:

Personal experience my sailfin is aprox 10"( size when i got him as a rescue) and i have added a 4-5" yellow, 4-5"powder blue and a 4-5" purple in that order over a years time the sailfin never bothered any of them he will darken in color to show he is ticked off but thats all he does..and thats with any fish i add to the tank except my sailfin HATES orbic batfish..the orbic batfish had to be moved to another tank because the sailfin and powder blue would tag team him and not give him a seconds rest

My Saifin and yellow reacted the same way to a cbb I added and had to remove. Mabye I will get lucky and he will ignore the purple.

the fish also grows to its surounding or space if he is in a small tank the odds are he will not grow much if hes in a large tank he will most likely grow

hey thanks dan!
In morning they are feed 3 sheets of nori along with two large leafs of romaine.
Evening Two more large leafs of romaine along with my homemade mixture of shrimp, krill, formula 1 & 2 and all their vitamins.
thanks again dan.

I don't believe fish will grow to their surrounds. But I would add the purple in first if you can. Let him get established, they are tough little tangs and can be quite aggressive.

Hey Thor I have a couple questions for you.

When you set up your new tank and had just the damsels in it did the tank actually cycle?

How long did you leave the tank with just the damsels in it?

Did you have a spike when you actually transferred the tangs and l.r. over?

I have been thinking about moving all the contents in from my 110 and 150 including the fish,water,l.r. and sand without having the tank sit for a while to cycle but I am worried about a spike.
Thanks, Dan

Yeah I did have just the damsels. But I did large water changes every week. I would take water from the 220 and put it into the 450. Slowly also taking rock out of the 220 and transfering it to the 450 also. I was slowly turning my 450 into the 220. Understand? No after about three weeks I totally transfered every single thing without a single problem. HTH.
