Tang has ich

BASHING ME ABOUT QT BEFORE ADDING FISH TO TANK WILL NOT HELP...IF YOU HAVE REAL ADVICE ON WHAT I SHOULD DO NOW PLEASE SHARE IT WITH ME. IF YOU JUST WANT TO TELL ME TO QT ALL NEW FISH....I ALREADY KNOW! ty

My powder brown tang has ich...he went from ich"free"(at least none I could see) to covered in 10 hours. The temp in my tank spiked while i was gone i think that may have stressed him out as well as he is the newest fish in the tank...yes i QT for 2weeks...i did not use copper though. This is my first tang...from now on i will use copper in the QT for sure! He has been in the main tank for 2 days...he was eating fine but now is not and he is listing to the side.
Other tank mates:yellow tail dam., 2 Percs., blenny, crabs, snails, starfish, soft/hard corals
My question is would it be more stressful to pull him out and QT again while he is soo weak/not eating, or is there something i can do to help him fight it so that he is healthier and then QT him?...the other fish have never had ich...but now they need to be QT also UGH

If your asking what I would do.....

I would leave things alone for now and keep the tank as stress free and the water quality as good as you can. Soak the food in garlic and vitamins and hope he starts to eat again. If he fights it off the next step is up to you. Do you want to remove all your fish and leave your tank fallow for 10-12 weeks, treating all your fish in copper or do you want to take you chances?

What are your current water parameters?

What are you feeding?

Got pics?

Is your QT ready? I'd assume you're going to need it, so have it, and fresh saltwater ready.

I want the ich out so i will have to remove all the fish...but i think the tang is too stressed to move right now. Im looking into hyposalinity instead of copper...which one would work best?

Well I prefer Seachem Cupramine. Hypo in my opinion is to much a PITA....I would wait to see if the fish starts to eat. If you move it now odds are it will not make the trip.

I am feeding formula 2 flakes, nori, brown, red algae, and frozen algae mix cubes, mysis cubes

ammonia - 0

Nitrate - 0

Nitrite - 0

Specific gravity - 1.025

temp - 78

ph - 8.3

all tested 30 mins ago

The tang is hiding now so not sure when i can get a picture but i will try

My QT is almost ready but it needs more RO/DI water...waiting for the holding tank to fill

My opinion would be to pull him out and get him in QT asap. If you think he could handle a freshwater dip for some temporary relief, before QT then even better. My vote would be for a copper treatment, as hypo is a pain and may take more time to produce results. HTH

In my expirience.....If you remove the fish in the current state its in you will not be happy with the result. Leave your tank as it would be normally. Don't turn off the lights just leave things alone. You have a better chance that way then stressing the fish out to remove it. Also the fact your QT is not set up and established leeds to more problems.

Since you don't have a QT station setup, I would get one or 2 cleaner shrimps. Let them develop a cleaning station. At the same time... FEED the fish more to help them build up their health...let nature take it's course. From my personal experience...hypo didn't work.

So when things go bad it seems they all go bad at once. My R0/DI isnt working...so i am waiting for hubby to get home so he can see whats wrong...or i hope to get our new RO/DI which should be here today...anyways this means i cant finish up the QT until later tonight.

I did take the fish out only because he was laying on his side...im doing tesst on the tank again...i think something is bugging him in there not sure what.

Right now he is in my 29 gal. bio cube that has just crabs and a few corals. Doing much better now even ate some frozen algae mix soaked in garlic. And he is swimming, although not strong, leans to the side everyonce in a while. I think the water flow was too much in my main tank for his weak state...i may just empty the crabs/sand/corals from my 29 gal. biocube :sad1: and start treating him in there...but right now im letting him rest from the move.

0 nitrates? How are you maintaining that?

Things sound much better in the 29. Are you soaking in vitamins as well? You don't want to miss any opportunity to administer supplements.

I'd leave him in this tank for the moment, and feed him several times a day. It sounds like you're already offering a very good diet. If he continues to be reluctant to eat, maybe you can add spirulina enriched brine to the rotation.

If he's infested with ich, I can't imagine UV doing anything to help.

A cleaner shrimp might have a field day, and provide some relief, but that assumes the shrimp and tang come together right away. If you have room for a cleaner shrimp, I'd consider it.

I'd also keep getting your QT going. If you have issues with water, just buy some from your LFS, or get an API tap water filter for the short term.

I haven't treated with copper, but unless your tang starts showing improvement fairly soon, I can't imagine you have many other choices.

Just remember that anything the copper comes into contact with will become deadly to your inverts. So you probably don't want to treat in the 29, and be careful with sharing nets and such between tanks.

And I know it's not helpful now... but if you QT new purchases in the future, I'd aim for 6 weeks in QT, whether you administer any treatments or not.

I will in the future QT tangs for much longer...sigh.

This all happens on a day i dont have my car...i used all my vita-chem (been out for a bit) but will get some as soon as i get my car back. As well as some copper i wont treat w/ copper in my 29 gal...i got my QT set up w/ help from a fellow reefer who brought some ro/di water over. Now im just waiting...i feel so bad for the fish! But he is doing much better in the 29 gal tank for now

im not good at posting pics...i hope this works

But he is doing much better in the 29 gal tank for now

Hmmm. What size is he? I'd be tempted to leave him be if he keeps improving, and the 29 isn't stressing him out.

If he becomes "cured" in the 29, you could then either add him back to the main tank, or treat **all** of your fish with copper, leaving the main tank fallow for 6 weeks or so.

It's a topic that people can't agree on, and you have to come to your own conclusion.
