Tang ID

I placed an order for fish online and I received the wrong fish. I got a tang in that came in a bit skinny so I put the guy in my 29 gallon refugium until he fattens up a little. He is about 5 inches and wanted to know what tang this is? any ideas? Thanks in advance.

These are the best pictures I could take but at the base of the tail, there is suppose to be a yellowish ring around it. The tail fin is a little bluish and the body is a brownish/blackish color. In the pictures, it isn't like that. It changes the colors periodically but I am assuming he is still stressed out from the shipping.

Its not a lavender tang. The body is actually darker but with flash and stress, it seems much lighter. Also, it has a yellowish ring around its tail which is faded in the pictures. I called up the company and told them and they said I can keep the wrong fish they shipped to me and they will ship out the right fish but I don't have space in my refugium at the moment for the fish I wanted.

I searched goggle for a lavender tang and I don't think it is one. They don't have the whitish ring around their tail and their spines are black. This guy has white spines with the whitish ring. You can't see that ring that much because it is faded a bit but you can see where the ring comes in on the base of its tail.

Looks like a young dussumieri tang to me... hard to say though. It's got the right color blade on it's tail and the markings on the pectoral fins look about right.

It looks exactly like a pic on WWM labeled fowleri, but WWM isn't always the best for difficult ID's. At 5" I'm surprised it doesn't have a bit more color if it's a fowleri.

Doesn't the fowleri have a black spine though and not a white one?

That is the fish I have but its not a fowleri. They have it labeled wrong. liveaquaria has a different picture for the fowleri tang.

Do dussumieri tangs have the maze like pattern on their body since juveniles or do they get that as they mature?
