tang options

upgrading to a 220 drilled tank 6x2x30 with a 40 gallon sump, was wondering what tangs would be ok for this tank, only looking for one or 2 tangs, preferably larger tangs, going to be fowlr

I also have a 220, any good combinations? Opinions? The sticky is excellent, but some personal experience on successful combinations would be great.

I would recommend the tennenti Tang and purple tang. I am going purely off the length of your tank as that is what matters, not so much how many gallons you have. You may be able to get away with an orangshoulder tang too. Lots of options including mimic tangs and bristletooth tangs.

def wont do a bristletooth tang, and not a purple, my favorites as far as tangs are blonde naso tang most favorite, achilles tang, orange shoulder, and lieutenant tang

You can't do a blonde naso tang as you don't have a large enough tank. Needs to be at least 8ft, 10ft being ideal. You could do an achilles, but they are extremely difficult to keep in captivity so I would advise against that. You may run into problems with a lieutenant(tennenti) tang and an orange shoulder tang together in the same tank.

You would be safest selecting tangs from different families. I have kept a purple with a hippo, for example. If you try 2 from the same family (e.g., the orange shoulder and the lieutenant, which would make a nice pair), you are taking a risk and both should be introduced at the same time plus you should make sure they are well fed.

Convict tangs are great and I love them, but they have the issue of being easily picked on by your other more aggressive fish. Sure if you add it first it will be aggressive towards any other fish added, but another tang could easily bully it.

not saying their wrong but who came up with the tank sizes for tangs? i think its a good sticky but 10 different websites say 10 different things, i have books that say a naso is fine for an entire lifespan in a 135, live aquaria says 180, blue zoo says 150, here says like 350 i cant remember on here but just saying, i understand that tank length is super important and all but im just wondering what makes one right and one wrong, and also yes i do believe that the bigger tank the better

8 feet long min. I think one from the Zebrasoma or the Ctenochaetus and one from the Paracanthurus or acanthurus genus would look nice and give the tank more biodiversity. HTH:)

There is no quicker way to start an argument on a fish board than to start a thread on tangs and tank size. As you noted even among experts there is no general agreement on tank size and some of the recommendations are from retailers who just want to sell fish.

I wouldn't put a naso or any other tang that exceeds a foot in a 6 foot tank but there are those who would disagree. I would stick with fish in the 6 to 10 inch range which still gives you lots of options.

agreed, not trying to start an arguement just asking, i think the tank sizes for tanks on here are pretty solid, just wanted to ask a simple question

The extremely experienced members on this site like the mods and some of the people like snorvich. I think that is who came up with them at least. Those sizes were thoroughly discussed before being posted in the stickies in numerous forums.
