tang tank size

ok so i know that tangs need at least a 55g tank(the smaller species that is, like kole/yellow). people say the tank needs to be at least be 4' long. ive had people say no to a tang in a 65g because its only 3' long and it not really gallons that matter but with space. does this mean that as long as you have a 4' tank you can keep some certain tangs, such as a 33gL or a 40gL? don't have a tang so no flaming me. i was just curious about this.

The bigger, the better with Tangs. Longer is better than deeper because it allows the fish more lateral swimming room.

You also have to take into consideration that these fish love to eat and poop. 33 or 40 gallons of water just isn't enough IMHO, to maintain a healthy, growing tang.

Can it be done? Yes. Should it be done? IMHO, no.

i fully agree with you on this one. they do produce a considerable amount of waste. i have one LFS that keeps all their fish in like 1-3g little cube tanks all connected together, i think it is very cruel, they sit on the bottom all day long and have no swimming room at all. basically all their tangs look sick.

yeah the longer the better... i went from a 4 foot to a 6 foot and my tangs are loving the extra 2 feet swimming from one end to the other

Personally, I like at least an eighteen inch wide tank for tangs. Maybe a fifty-five would be okay for smaller species, but when rock and equipment is accounted for, there isn't a whole lot of back-and-forth swimming room. I feel that a three foot sixty-five gallon is better than the four foot fifty-five, simply because of the extra width. Even still, the only tangs I could recommend for either tank would be a small bristletooth species. A seventy-five gallon would be better, what with the four foot length and eighteen inch width.

your right about the poop, my boys are horses and when they let it go you know. My skimmers smell horrible when i clean them. You know that theory like grass through a goose, yeah.
Like nori through a tang!

I wouldnt do any tang in any tank smaller than a 90 but thats just me. I wouldnt do any big species like a hippo, naso, sailfin, ect., in anything smaller than a 200. These fish need as much room as possible.

Me too!!

Hum alright i agree that Naso's , sailfin and other Big Tangs need a lot of space..

Although i think some tanks the smaller ones, can be OK if the tank has like 50inch long and 15/17 wide.. that tangs that i am talking it's like the Yellow tang, kole tang for example.
That's my opinion!

then again sometimes i see my tangs cleaning up after each other... food doesnt look that digested but the skimmer still smells bad!

Yes Kole Tangs are really PERFECT algae eaters..
i ve had one, and i Never saw algae.

I have a purple tang in my 90 gallon and he is very happy. He has lots of swimming space to. I don't think purples and yellows swim as much as other tangs.

Hum.. If think it depends on the Layout of the Reef aquarium, if u have the layout plenty of Rock, your fishes don't have so many space to ''swim''..

vlamingi when fully grown i've read gets pretty big along with unicorn tang 180+ i think was the suggested size
