like everyone else, i have a early stage ich tang,,,,3 spots on pec fin.....was in qt and was fine...now in 150 with other fish....i suppose i have to pull ALL the fish out and back to the qt for treatment.....have copper and rid ich on hand...whats best????

If you have a fish-only tank, then you can do hyposalinity directly in the display. If you have just a few corals and inverts, then I would just remove those and go hypo on the display. If you have a fully stocked reef, then yes, remove all of the fish and go for copper in the QT. My preferred treatment is Cupramine by Seachem as it's easier on the fish, and the concentration stays very stable, even with skimming.

if you want to avoid taking your fish out, try using an elevated metronidazole treatment with hyposalinity. i woulnd't recomend using any other meds in the tank. if you put them in qt, i like to use formalin and mallachite at 1.5 times the recomended dose. its a very fast and efective treatment for crypt and its easier on the fish than copper.

Metrondiazole is not effective on ich, it's only effective on deep tissue anaerobic protozoans. I'd also avoid elevating the dosage of malachite green formalin treatments, it's just not necessary and harsh on the fish...especially the formalin part. Good stuff, but not when overdosed.

Metrondizole is sold under several names depending on vendor. Flagyl is also a commonly used name it's sold under. Being a pharmacist, take a look at the pharmacology before you use it ;)

Do they sell it specifically for fish or just use pharmaceutical grade? I do not think I will be able to find the dose for fish in my books......anybody know how to use it in a fish tank?

I will be using it for fin rot....what is the best treatment for fin rot and can I put something in the reef tank with no corals yet just live rock????? does it work.....bc my blue tang and firefish have fin rot....thanks

You need an antibiotic for fin rot, not metrondiazole. I'd suggest either Nitrofuran or Maracyn 2, both should be readily available from your LFS.

does melafix really work?

I have had zero success with Melafix and Pimafix in treating disease.
Metronidazole is effective in treating internal parasites and certain external parasites (NOT effective on ich or velvet). I tried Flagyl by Pfizer in aqueous/liquid form for humans, but it killed my fish. I'm not sure if it's because the human formulation contains ingredients which fish are sensitive to. Or perhaps my fish's health was beyond the point of treatment.
