Tang X 10 / 125

I would like to hear comments about putting ten yellow tangs in an open six foot 125 gallon tank. Posibly even more than ten.

I've seen this setup in a few movies and I believe a famous R&B singer had a similar setup over his bed. Saw it on a TV channel somewhere.

So what do you think about this sort of setup - good or bad.

Thanks

Okay, because a six foot tank just isn't big enough to handle ten or more tangs. Beside all the fighting that will be going on, that is a huge bioload, which will add to the stress that they are already be under from all the fighting that will happen.

Probably not a good idea. They will pick at each other. I would think that sw tanks seen in movies are temporary. All of those fish will be seperated eventually.

don't be influenced by tv and movies

Are these comments coming from actual experience? I've read just as much material as the next guy.

I was kind of hoping I can get some voice of experience - like, yea I tried this and all the tangs killed each other, or, yea I tried this and 15 worked really well.

Don't want to insult but I can read just as well. However, like many aggressive fish be it salt or fresh - most people that have success do so because of keeping in large numbers.

Have any of you actually tried this?

honestly, it wouldn't occur to me to try this. it seems like too many in that sized tank. (and I don't like yellow tangs, anyway) :) I'd be surprised if you found anyone that tried that particular set-up, planning for long term.

I agree. Also, it's not like I am trying it - just curious to see who has and what was the outcome. I worded my thread intro like I want to try it but really I just want to bring out those who have - I am very intersted in knowing if it worked out for the better. Of course most books and internet sources will say it wont. However, there are sources that say if you are going to try it - then introduce all at once.

Shoot, there was a thread not too long ago about someone trying the same thing. At the time it had only been that way for about a week, think it was a bigger tank (( but still to small IMO )) and had about 7- 10 in there.

But, honestly I can't think of anyone else who has tried that, mainly because most think it is a bad idea.

Simple research would bring up a huge red flag to this. Most people don't put more then 3 tangs in a 125g, just for the lack of space. You'd need a much bigger tank to do 10 plus tangs, no one would be willing to try this, if they actually cared for the fish. I'm not trying to flame or be harsh, but I think this thread/question is a little ridiculous? If you've done the research, I'm sure you've gotten an answer. Again not trying to be an A hole, just seems a little  to me.

People love to be told what they want to hear and love to dismiss what they dont.

Nope. That's not me. In fact, I am not even interested in trying myself. Just wanted to know if anybody tried it. Trust me - I've been down the "Tang Police" road before. If I wanted to do something with my tank like that I wouldn't even ask anybody - I would just go and do it. Like I said though - I just wanted to see if I could hear from someone who tried it.

Thanks for the responses I appreciate it.

FYI - I would not ask a FORUM for advice on any tank. I just do what I feel. Sometimes things work sometimes they dont. How I see it. But I think we're going down the wrong path here.

Still - if anybody tried it - would like to hear about it - though I dont blame you for staying silent LOL

Overall, bad idea. The only way it will work is if you feed enough to the point where they wont have to fight for food. When food is scarce, thats when they become very aggressive towards each other.

I dont think its that bad of an idea really. In an open tank, there would be a lack of defined areas, so without territories, I doubt they would pick on each other much. 10 is pushing it a little, but maybe 5-6 in a 125g would be do-able. Just introduce them all at once so none take over and harm the newer ones.

I don't believe everything I see on TV but I'm sure those display ideas come from somewhere - and I bet a lot of money folk have these kinds of displays all the time. A tank full of yellow tangs would disperse aggression on any one individual since none can claim a territory. The political correctness on this board faithfully keeps me away LOL

If being PC consists of not chucking 10 large fish in a too-small tank, I'm glad to be PC. You do what you want, of course, but try to have some respect for the animals you're choosing to take into your care.

I've read nothing but awesome advice from this community since I started lurking and I'm sure the above posters aren't squelching your dream of a 10-tang tank simply because they're having a case of the Mondays or a bad hair day.

Good luck to you -

That's weird. I though I mentioned above that I did not personally want to set this tank up. Only wanted to know if someone tried it and how did it work out. I think about a lot of different setups but it doesn't mean I try them in my own tank. read the whole thread and you'll see that I covered this.

But thanks for your comment.

BTW what is the largest sized yellow tang that anyone has seen in a tank? Outside of a show tank in a restaraunt.

See - what I don't like is textbook answers. I can do that all by myself. I was hoping for some real life experience. Textbook answers I already have.

And this site is grand and wonderful and filled with knowledge but I am fishing for something else.

my friend has a 600 gallon tall tank and has 3 medium tangs doing fine. I have seen 10 tangs in a 3000 gallon tank. i know these are irrelevant numbers but what I am trying to say is that you would need much more bigger tank with more swimming room. it's a hit or miss but sometimes they do school together. i would have to agree that it is a huge bio load and Tangs are really violant if they don't like thier "look alike".
