Tangs and lower temperature

Hi all,

Q) Has anybody done any testing to see the affects of lower temps on tangs (color, appetite, long term survivability, growth etc)What are the pros/cons of lower tank temps for FOWL , other than O2 levels.

I notice that liveaquaria and others "recommend" temps of 72-78 deg/F for tangs ( I didn't check every tang listed).

thanks

What do you consider a "lower temp?" There are people here on RC that keep their reefs around 73deg F and they have tangs. Everything seems to be fine. Only change is their metabolism is going to be lower than if the same fish were kept at 78 deg F. Growth will be slower, waste production will be lower. It shouldn't affect color provided the fish is not stressed.

Closer to the 72 deg mark.

I asked the question because I noticed my Goldrim stayed dark brown in cooler water. Goldrims can range in color from an ugly fleshy-tan to a rich velvety black/brown. In cooler temps his colors are nicer.

But would this come with a cost - was I slowly killing the tang over time because 74 deg is stressful?

72-78 degrees is Live Aquarias recommendation for both FOWLR as well as Reef tanks. my guess is they just mirrored that temp over to Tangs as well as their other fish. That being said, i keep my tank at 77-78 and my all of my are thriving. Last time I saw anything here on RC about temp, that seemed to be more of the norm temp for most folks.

I agree, I think 72 would be the minimum before you could see effects. Who knows, you might not see any effects at that temp. Me, I would not go under 72 in a worst case scenario.
