Tangs for the new tank?

I am looking at adding some tangs in a few weeks to my new 400+ eight foot tank. I have a Kole that will make the move from the 210. My plan is to add a group of convicts and am considering adding one, maybe two other species. I hope to get all small specimans and add them at the same time. I was considering a Powder Brown but I have no experience with them personally.

Not to be rude but I have read and read about fish and I am looking more from your actual experiences.

The only ones that are that are out are extremely large tangs, disease prown tangs and yellow tangs. Not a big fan of yellow tangs.

Thanks for your suggestions based upon your experience.

Great alternatives for Yellow: Sailfin, Purple.

I would also consider a Chevron tang, and the Sohal is a beauty.

the large tank sure opens up almost all the possibilities with tangs, except for very large ones like vlamingii or unicorn. salfin would make a nice addition; when it extends all of its fins it's just beautiful. naso tangs are also nice but they will do better in a 10' tank. i have a powder blue and it's also nice, though it can be aggressive sometimes.

I have 3 tangs in my 210(purple, sohal, and lavender). I transferred them from my 90. They all fought for a day or two, but nothing bad until they established their new territory.

Do Chevrons and Koles get along usually in a tank? Chevrons are very nice looking fish. Sailfins are also very different and everything that I have read about them is that they are also a hard working fish.

I tried to edit the original post to show that I actually can spell prone.

I don't reccomend a group of convict tangs. Many have a reputation of being aggressive. I would think you will need a much larger tank for more than one. I think even a single convict might end up causing problems.

My vote for a 400 tank list goes like this

Chevron
Blue
Mimic or orange shoulder
Yellow eye
Scopas or long snout
Lavender

That's about all I would suggest, I think you could easily remove 2 or 3 from that list. I'm not really a fan of tangs any more as there are many other medium sized fish that mix much better without the aggression and coral picking issues that tangs have.

29Reef you're the first I've heard from that has said that convicts are aggressive. I have only heard about how passive they are and watch out for other tangs bullying them.

Been a long day with many threads. Ooops. ;)

An excellent selection IMO

I too am no longer a tang advocate.

The good news is that I have a lot of time to ponder the choices. Thanks for your suggestions.

The convict comment catches me off guard. I have had them in a 150 and a 210 and never have seen a bit of aggression. That is why I try to go on experience.

The orange shoulder intrigues me.

I had a powder brown and it was an amazing fish. No problem with ich and got along well with the other fish. I also think the Dejardin is a beautiful especially when they are feeling energetic and their colour changes between light and dark.

The Powder Brown is one of if not the most beautiful tang. I do also like the Dejardin. They just get very big...as do most tangs.

I saw a Naso Tang in a 1.3 million gallon public aquarium, that was at least 24" plus streamers.

Makes me wonder how young the small tangs we keep really are....
