I have largish tanks and tangs would make them look small. They tend to be aggressive (except the huge naso species), and many other fish are much more interesting.
Boycotting is a strong term. However, I agree that there are many other choices out there in addition to tangs, like various angels and certain butterflies, that are no more reef risky than many tangs, especially acanthurus species.

Could you clarify this statement? When you say reef risky, would you mean specifically aggressive towards inverts, corals, fish or all three? Or just generally aggressive? Or something else?
