I've got an 80 gallon SCA tank 32x24x24 that has around 100lbs of rock in it...is it safe to assume that this is insufficient swim space for a yellow tang? I love tangs but don't want to be cruel. Let me know thanks

From how my Tangs act i would say NO its not enough room. They are super active and swim from end to end and in and out of the rock work all day Picking at everything for food...and a yellow tang gets 6 to 8 inches i believe ..

Ohh My Tank is 84x30x22 ... with about 300 lbs of live rock bare bottom...

I have a purple tang in my 93 cube for almost a year now. Looking back, I knew better to begin with and should not have purchased him. He is still small and is very active, but I can see that it would not be right to keep him in such confined quarters. I will be trading him for some sps with a buddy of mine soon. Long story short, unless it was a HUGE cube I would NOT advise it! Good luck!

We have all done this not thinking or not know what we ended up with.
We got a sick Vlamingi tang From a not so good LFS 2 years ago that was about dead... We qt ed and got back healthy( the poor thing still has scars on its body from the lateral line) She Was in our 7 foot tank until she got to where she liked to play with small corrals.. she would Pick them up and pack around in the tank.Put them where she (we call her she but not sure)wanted them to be . So we Built the Pond next to our Reef tank. You can see in my Avatar ..
So its not a idea situation. But she is very calm eats well and interacts like a pet.. She can swim in complete circles in the pond as the rock work is in the middle with a Cave for her to sleep.. We have Guppies Chromis and a bi color angle fish in there with her... She loves baby guppies as a snack and Goes Chromis Bowling every chance she gets.....

I would do it again other then just have the fish Die.... But i know many say let it die on the lfs and they will stop getting them... :headwallblue:

Anyway
Sorry for kinda off TOPIC POST

Unfortunately, Tangs are grazers that cover large expanses in a reef so to place them in a small tank will cause them stress with Ich being the end result, IMO!

While too small a tank does stress out tangs, it does not cause ich. Only ich can cause ich.
