Tangs with White Spots

Hello noticed some white spots a week ago on my PBT. And now my Yellow Tang, and another tang I don't know how to spell it but it's like a Taninia Tang have them. Tonight My PBT looks like he has been sprinkled lightly with salt. He is eating and still swimming around but I know something is not right. He's in a 180 gallon tank with 2 other tangs and a couple of clown fish and two gobies. I turned on my UV sterilizer and have my fingers crossed. This am I noticed white spots on the other tangs and the spots on the PBT have appeared to turn black. Very small black spots. Not really sure I could catch them to put in a QT. What do you think it is and What should I try to do? My tank is about 6 months old with 150 pounds of LR and all parameters were good this am. All the fish are eating good and swimming like normal.
 
white spots on a fish, especially tangs, indicates a case of ich, or crypt. there's no easy way to remove ich completely from your tank. one way to remove ich is run hyposalinity in the main tank for several weeks. another option is to starve the fish-host parasite by not having any fishes in the infected tank for multiple weeks. there is no remedies on the shelf that i know of that will work for sure. also hyposalinity will kill all inverts and corals.
 
Went to the LFS and they gave me a product by Kent Marine that I can treat the tank with. I think its 7 treatments every other day.
 
Not to burst your bubble but most tank treatments don't work well. The best thing you can do is set up a hospital tank and do hyposalinity treatment. While your fish are in qt Leave you display fallow. The hypo should kill the icy but I would still dip the fish before and after qt. If this just isn't possible run your uv and soak your fishes food in selcon. Sometimes a healthy fish can fight it off. If they stop eating however it's a wrap and you could loose all oe most of your fish. Happened to me when I was getting started. I had no means to qt tho. But without a proper qt and fallow tank there's a chance that ich can pop back up. Good luck
 
You could try to get a cleaner shrimp, they will eat the ich in the tank and clean your fish, They are little pricey though. You could also get a cleaner wrasse, they are much cheaper and will eat parasites also. either option may work but it will take a while for your tangs to trust the cleaners enough to actually let them clean. Its worth a try. This is the reason that I got a cleaner wrasse to begin with, so I hopefully wont have to deal with this problem.
 
A) There is no magic 'in tank' treatment for ich.
B) UV sterilizers do not treat ich.
C) Cleaner shrimp do not rid tank of ich.
D) Cleaner wrasses do not rid tank of ich.
E) Soaking fish food in things does not rid tank of ich.

There is ONE thing you can do at this point to remove the parasite from your tank and that is to remove the fish to a quarantine tank, and leave your display fishless for 8 weeks or better. A proper qt of ALL introduced specimens is so important, because it CANNOT be treated IN your tank.

If there's one good write up here on RC about ich and it's lifecycle, then there must be a million. Do a search here on ich and you'll have enough to read for a few days. lol You'll then see what you must do and you'll have a step by step guide.

If you can remove the fish to a qt it would be better. If not, remove the live rock and treat with Rid-ich. Your tangs have black ich. If you don't treat soon they will probably die. Ich can only be treated in the tomite free swimming stage. The ich falls off the fish's body and goes to the bottom to reproduce and release more tomites to infect your fish. If you have corals you will have to remove the fish to QT.
 
Ok. I'm setting up the QT. I've got a 75 gallon tank, heaters, power head, a HOB filter on the way and a HOB skimmer on the way. I do not have any type of light so any suggestions would be great. I"m planning on taking and using about 30 gallons of water from my old tank and new RODI water to top it off. Presently I'm using something from Kent Marine, http://www.kentmarine.com/products/kent-rxp.htm I have about 12 days of treatment left. In that time I'm going to set up this QT and get it running. Right now the fish look good and I'm feeding them well. Any suggestions would be appreciated
 
Shouldn't need a light for just fish. They don't care ;)

Ambient room/window light or whatever you have laying around is ok, mostly so you can watch them and observe the treatment process.
 
Good for you goof with qt. Keep it updated and let us know how they are doing. Also if you use any tricks to catch the fish post them up. Remember it takes the sift weeks of fallow to kill off the ich. Remember the pain of settig up the large qt and carving the fish so, remember to qt everything.

Also if the fish have ich, I belie e that is different then black ich. Different treatment too. Can't recall the details, try a search on the black ich.
 
Black Ich is a small worm, it's treatable with Prazi Pro. The treatment can be done along side copper safely.

I applaud your efforts to QT the fish, I assure you that nothing but good results will be achieved if you take your time and do it right.
