If I were to buy a tang, which tang would be the best for me to get. I have heard they can be fickle and prone to sickness, so if anyone would suggest the best tang in there experience or from what they have heard.
Ben, if you do buy a yellow tang, I'd spend the extra money to add a cleaner shrimp as well. I had a yellow tang that was rescued from several nasty infections by a particularly energetic cleaner shrimp.
Plus, cleaners are terrific animals to add color and character to the tank.
Yellow tangs are great additions to the tank, though.
I'd be pretty wary of it. I can't comment specifically, as I've never owned a puffer, but I don't know that I've ever SEEN one in a tank with a shrimp in it.
Any other recommendations from the peanut gallery as to what would make a more effective (and less tasty) cleaner animal for the tang?
The thought behind the recommendation for the cleaner shrimp is due to their penchant for falling victim to infection. For a new hobbyist's tank, it may be best to do everything possible to ensure long term success by adding fail-safes (i.e. cleaner shrimp or cleaner goby) to keep the risks down.
I dont have a cleaner shrimp, but I do have a nean blue goby. The tang allows the goby to mount him on either side and clean. the goby also likes to clean off my fingers when i feed the tank. the tang has brightened up in his face since the goby addition.
So I should buy a yellow tang with a neon blue goby for my tank. Cool!
Here is the other half of the deal, I also have a Moorish Idol (she's my baby) and I really don't want the tang and her not to get along. Do you think that they would fight at all since they both have some yellow on them or are yellow tangs pretty friendly?
They have a gorgeous Naso Tang at Hungs' and I really want to buy it, but it is really large and I dont think it would have enough space in my 125.
just make sure if you plan on getting any other tangs that you add the yellow in last. I didn't do it that way and my yellow tang is VERY VERY aggressive toward any new comers. I had a hippo tang die cause of the little aggressive yellow booger ;p I could have probably saved my investment if I had a QT tank but live and learn
Now I won't get one until I have a QT tank setup so if the yellow tang decides to pick on any other fish I have a nice little home for the fish to recuperate.
Originally posted by xroads I saw that tang @ Sea of Marvels this weekend. It is very awesome, but should be in a 1000 set up as big as it is.
I absolutely agree. The thing was huge, but sure pretty! Ah well. I like yellow tangs too! I also like those really pretty blue tangs, but they get lateral line so easily. I feed 20 or so foods, so I am hoping that will help with any of my fish getting it, especially the tangs which are prone to it.
