Tangs

I was wondering how bad of an idea it was to put two yellow tangs together in a 130gal? I havent done it yet, just considering it.. and what to know what you all thought of it first.

I saw a tank at a doctors office that had 4. Apparently someone talked them into buying them to help with the bad hair algae problem they had. I didn't see any fighting.

In the wild Tangs school, even adults. The main problem with keeping more then one is the food source. Tangs graze all day on the live and substrate. If there isn't enough for more then one, then they get territorial. In a 130g you shouldn't have any problems, but there is no guarantee. If its a 130L you should be fine. Even one gets agressive, there is plenty of room for the other to run.

What I have heard is keep a single tang or groups of 3 or more. Seems that if you have 2 one will pick on the other but with 3 or more it's harder for them to tell who to pick on. Just something I've read, I haven't tried it.

BTW, hope you folks don't mind me commenting in your forum. I've been following it since before the last frag swap and I sometimes forget that I'm down here in Huntsville.

I don't see a problem with it... I have a yellow and a gold rim tang together in a 75g... I keep plenty of Nori in the tank and they get along fine...

haha looks like I'll have to come up with another name for the fishie.. unless he already has one. I don't want to confuse him by calling him 'ralph' when his name is 'ted' lol

One I have now is named 'Willy'.

I have heard/read the same thing. 2 tangs of different types is different than 2 of the same type.

I know I don't mind you "trolling around" at all H@rry:)

I think putting two yellow tangs in one tank is a really really BAD idea.

Yes there are exceptions out there of people who do things they aren't supposed to with combining tangs, but generally (most of the time) when you put two tangs of the same body type together they will duke it out to the death. That's just two with the same body type and this would be two of the exact same kind of tang.

BAD BAD BAD idea. JMO.

Harry...it's totally fine for you to post in here!

My brother-in-law has a 210G with four Yellow Tangs. They rarely fight with each other, but get picked on alot. They are still small, and do school.
