Tank at UCO: Rebuild and clean

Hi all,

As most of you know, we use an atrium at UCO. Part of that deal is that we look after a tank that is housed there. Well the short of the matter is that it is a mess and needs to be stripped, cleaned, refitted and generally overhauled.

Ideally the hood needs to be replaced with a much better one and stained to match the stand. New bulbs are required and probably a new ballast and lights purchased.

The rock needs removing, scrubbing and cleaning.

The sump also needs work to allow growth of chaetomorpha.

We also need sand. Lots of sand.

Here is a list of teams that are needed and a list of parts/supplies that are required. Please, if you have time volunteer to help out and lets make this tank represent our club, not be a poor example of a marine tank.

Teams:
Cleaning
tasks, stripping rock out, cleaning rock ready to place back in.

Plumbing
Working on the sump to make it able to grow chaeto.

Electrical:
Possibly adding a ballast and a strip of T5s.

General:
Just help as required.

Donations:
CASH this will take money to do, if you can dontae even a few dollars it would go a long way towards these goals. Please PM with any donations of cash. Cash would be put towards a new hood or lights.

SAND: We will need probably 8 40lb bags of aragonite.

Soft Corals: Ideally this tank would be best suited to soft corals.

It would be good to try and get this going before the school starts back.

Please feel free to post comments/concerns/questions.

Thanks
Paul.

I can donate a bag of sand and some time. Let me know when you are going to try to get this done. Moving is not going to be fun, so hopefully a little later than sooner.

Kevin

Kevin, Thanks for the offer. The sand would be most welcome. I understand you will be moving soon, but any time is better. Ill add you in the sand section.

P.

Paul, I remember at one time you had talked about building a completely new sump, or just building one out of an old tank.

Heartland Custom Aquatics as a COMAS sponser would be more then happy to donate the time to build a sump ahead of time, if the funds are available for the Acrylic. I would offer up Acrylic but replacing a motor in the car has me tapped for the time being.

I am very eager to work on the tank, but I'm not sure how scheduling and funds will fall for me, so I'm going to place myself on the General Help team. Don't be afraid to tell me that you need help with something or be surprised if I show up to help.

Paul, do you still have my bag of Southdown sitting behind the tank?

All (especially Paul), should we focus on trying to add many Donor Program Soft corals to the tank? This way we have a backup plan if something fails in our tanks?

Add us to the clean up crew, sand donation and all around in general. I'm off work for a short time and can get after the clean up as of now. What are we going to do with the current residents in the mean time?

im not sure there are any....
other than various algaes.

Hopefully there should be quite a few finger leathers in there from Dustin Combs (Fragged by me) from the last time we had a meeting at UCO.

well....i would have to say i would be surprised. With only a few old VHO bulbs over that tank, its not really the ideal conditions.

I really hope they are thriving, it would be great.

Paul, if the overhaul is going to be on a weekend you can add me to all list. I'm not able to donate any cash. We just purchased our first home.
I have time to donate on weekends.

Paul, I just finished plumbing two setups and have lots of leftovers (PVC/connectors/etc) that I would be happy to donate as well as assist in putting together. Mondays are the best day for me. Feel free to put me down and let me know when you need help.....

Truthfully, I can't remember how much rock is in the tank, but if people like the look of the man-made rock that I make or if they like the idea of possibly promoting conservation, I'm more than happy to make some for the tank.

Thanks Guys.

Travis, as far as rocks go, it should have plenty, but a few pieces would be nice to use as a show case of how the rock looks.

Thanks.

P.

I thought the tank was pretty full last time I remembered. I'll see if I can make something to be visually appealing. How about a mermaid statue? I'll use your costume as a template ;) :D

I really don't have any spare time on my hands to help but can loan some equipment if neccessary. I have a nice hydrolic lift (was the food table for the meeting) as well as some dollys. I don't think you plan on moving it but I thought I'd offer.

G.

no, we dont plan on moving it, its huge!!

Right now, getting to look nice and filled with captive bred/raised corals would be good.
