tank crash

My vote is either temp spike or drop in alkalinity.
+1 that was my first thought also...

I would say lack of replenishing Alk.

For me it occurred when my co2 had ran out and I didn't notice for a few days. My Alk dropped to about 6.5 from my normal 8.5

Temp runs between 78 in morning and peaks around 80 at end of day. We did add polyfilter bags last evening and they seem to have cleaned up the water quality.

Cloudiness has gone away. All fish continue to be active, though we are concerned for the Mandarin and Butterfly fish since they may run out of things to eat if all the small critters didn't make it.

Some of the Non-SPS are opening up slowly too, but are certainly stressed right now still.

We had three things happen to us over the 24 hour period.
1) Sps falling into the Clam
2) One of our pumps on Protein Skimmer stopped working Sunday Night. When I removed it from sump had it unplugged, but it smelled like bad electrical burning. I think it actually shorted out. Found that out the hard way while holding in hand at sink while rinsing after removing from sump and trying to get it figured out. It smelled hot, then plugged in and was giggling it and got a nice zap.. Also noticed it was actually smoking when I had it out of water. Did not leave plugged in long(10) seconds and saw smoke. It is a EU-590 AquaUsa, says it contains no oils but I suppose that could have started a chain of events too.
3) Finally had dosed some SPS for some Polyp eating type of flat worm in ReVive Coral Cleaner, Possible there were many more of the worms than I saw that could have left out toxins as well, but visible the SPS's seemed clean after dipping. This was first done on Saturday Evening and a few more on Sunday, but looking at the tank at 9:00pm Sunday Night, everything looked good. Just went south between 9pm Sunday and 8am Monday morning...

For running Carbon, is it best to use an reactor type setup with an up-flow type setup?

Written by Dustin2's Dad, he probably already has ideas on the carbon setup, but thought I would ask and elaborate a bit more on our delima.

Your pump burning up could have definitely spiked your temp for a short time while running before it clocked up. Do you have a controller where you could check the log or a digital heater where you can see max temp?

That's a lot of dipping for a SPS coral to handle. Did you rinse them after each dip in fresh saltwater before adding them back into the system?

I dont know much but I think #2 is going to be your cause.

Current leak and then maybe Oxegen levels while the skimmer was not running.

Dip was done just on Sunday Afternoon, they were not rinsed off before placing back in tank. They were all open and looked fine in tank that evening as well. I was mis-taken when I said dip was done twice. Just the one time. Dustin corrected me on that.

I would have to guess alk spike/drop or temperature. Though I wouldn't rule out something crazy like salinity meter being off, heater cracked, lighting shield cracked.

Dude, we're always on the same page!
And I get so excited when we agree...

Where did you find that video of me? That was the end of 6th grade year and I just found out we were going to Wyandot Lake the next day!

I'd lean toward the pump. Might be a good idea to test for copper. The carbon is a definate good idea in any event.
I had a Rio smoke in a sump that wreaked havoc on the frags I had in the sump. The water even smelled like the burned pump. I've seen similar results with a kalk OD.
