"Best" method is a deli shrimp ( raw tiger shrimp usually - be sure to shell it) placed into a nylon. Drop it onto your sand bed, or tie onto light fixture/etc, and let it rot for about a day or so. I saw a nice ammonia spike the next day and removed it. Nylon helps keep the mess to a minimum and makes it real easy to remove.
My cycle just finished yesterday without issue, except some minor problems with patience, and this method made it fairly foolproof.
i'm cycling 50lbs of DR in a 20g rubbermaid tote right now. i had put in a huge jumbo shrimp in a bag and put a few holes in the bag. turned the heater on to about 85degrees and in 2 days my Ammonia was 10.
