tank drilling

i have a 20 gallon high on the bottem it has the tempered glass sticker.does that mean just the bottem is tempered glass or the whole tank?i think the tank came from petworld.i want to use it for a refugium.how much/reliable are overflow boxes?thanks

Usually just the bottoms are tempered. And as far as overflow boxes, If it is a single it will handle around 500-600 gal per hour and usually work the best if kept in that range. I have had a 40 gal tank with 2 overflow boxes on it with a mag 12 return full open and have never had a problem during the last 3 years. I would suggest a slightly larger pump with a ball valve on it to control the flow.

there will not be any pumps.i built a 7 ft cc skimmer so was thinking of having the return from skimmer drain into the fuge then drain back into my sump.

That should work O.K., just be sure if there is not a lot of water flow (1 or 200 gal ) per hour, that you periodically check for an air pocket in the U-tube. You can also splice an airline connector hooked to a small powerhead venturi intake to automatically pull any air ouy of the u-tube. Hope this helps.
