tank flow...

i have a 40gal hex tank and a powerhead rated at 240gph...seems to create enough flow for my tank, but some peoples are insane...what is your opinion?

I use a mag 9.5 (750 gph) as my return pump, a Maxi 1200 (292 gph) as a tank circulating pump and a mag 3 (350 gph) on my skimmer and I think I need MORE flow on 55

depends on what you're keeping in the tank. with fish only it can vary. corals prefer strong changing current. i would add at least 2 more powerheads of equal size. maybe add hydor"s flo to one or two of the powerheads. i recommend 900 or 1200 Maxi- Jets, they are small, powerful, low power usage, and work with wavemakers.

right now its fish only, but the tank is cycling...then i will start to add corals...nothing too nuts cause i dont have the lighting for it.

i added another 1200 to the mix...how should i have the flow going? down on the rocks? up towards the surface? straight out?

i have a PC 10,000k and actintic.

i think it would be better if you showed us a pic, in a hex i probably would try and create a current that started at the back and then crashed in the front, maybe another smaller powerhead for surface breakage... HTH

Yes, some "peoples" (sic) are insane. I suppose it might be genetic, maybe environmental... it's hard to say without proper examination. what's this got to do with your grossly under-powered system?

Flow

Flow

Yes it depends on what you are going to keep, but it also depends on how much work you want to put in. The higher the flow (within reason) will help with keeping a healthy environment. Consider the natural environment vs. our small aquariums! Tunze on there web site has a good description of flow at various points in the reef. I am not sugesting that you use Tunze, but it is good information.
