I place two 1/4" airline hoses about a half inch down into the pipe that leads to the return. I have found if I use one, I get a lot of sucking. I have an eshoppes hob overflow. It takes a lot of messing with to get it quiet.

My LifeReef overflow box was pretty noisy (gurgle) until I read the directions a little more carefully. He recommends putting flexible airline hose down the return hose until it reaches the "sweet" spot. Believe me, when you reach the right point, you'll know it. Now all I hear is a little running water sound, which is quite pleasant.

Flexible tubing does work wonders with eliminating the "gurgle" or sucking sound with HOB overflows, but you probably will have to go with at least 1/4" tubing (not regular 1/8" airline tubing) or larger if you are trying to move a lot of water down a 1" bulkhead drain.

I also use a "bubble extractor" or "drain muffler" at the other end of my flexible drain line to eliminate salt spray and splashing - search for "Prugs Bubble Extractor" here on RC for further details if needed.
