Tank manufacturer recommendations

Hi All,

I'm located in Central Texas about an hour North of Austin and 2.5 South of Dallas. Houston and San Antonio are also within driving distance if necessary. We're moving houses and the wife gave me the go ahead to upgrade my current system. I'm running a 130 gallon acrylic (5ftx18inx30in). The tank will be flush with the wall of the game room and extend into the office for maintenance and so that the whole family can enjoy it at their leisure (current one is in my office and I work from home). We're having the wall built so we have options when it comes to tank size. I'm not a fan of the 30in deep tank as it makes maintenance a huge pain for anything on the bottom. I was thinking a 180 or 240 gallon system. We have one little one and are licensed for foster care so I thought sticking with acrylic would be better given the potential for toys being thrown etc...

I've been trying to identify potential manufacturers and got a quote from the fish gallery (Austin). I looked at glass cages prices but heard a number of horror stories and even the positive experiences still noted some defects with their glass tanks. Has anyone had experience with their acrylics?

Other manufacturers I identified included LivingColor, Envision Acrylics, and TruVu. Thoughts? Comments?

Also the gentleman at the Fish Gallery said they could do either glass or acrylic, but recommended glass. Apparently they reinforce their corners with steel instead of plastic and use a much thicker glass. The plus for using them would be they're close enough that they'd be willing to handle the install and offer a 3 year warranty. Also they'd be willing to do a monthly maintenance package

I also live in ATX and am looking at a 240g either glass or acrylic. I'd love to hear a "range" on what Fish Gallery estimated.

Always also wondered how much more it was to have an LFS order/install it vs. doing it directly with a vendor.

bFRENCH,

I'd love to hear your thoughts on going through the process with Fish Gallery. How much more expensive was it than going directly through AGE? Did they visit your house and help consult you on logisitics or feasibility?

My initial interaction with some of them, they kept asking me "why wouldn't I want a closed loop?" since I don't want one.

I am picking up my 300 gal acrylic tomorrow. Made by midwest custom aquariums. I'll let ya know what I think.

I got my glass 300g from Planet Aquariums, also in Texas. 3/4" glass, built like a tank! I don't think any kid toys would do much. :)

I went with AGE on my new 450. stainless steel frame on top and bottom and pvc bottom. not looking back on this. its a very nicely built tank.

I agree with the AGE hybrid models. My tank is approx 525 gallons. PVC bottom, plumbed for a closed loop with two over flows and stainless steel bracing. They delivered the well built tank to my LFS in Nashville and we installed it as my house was being finished. It went in my study with a crane (we sweated that out!) and I have been extremely pleased. Glass all around. Their products are high quality in my view and well worth the price. They will design to your specs. I use the loop for extra flow and to connect to my chiller which is located in my basement due to noise and heat. You could certainly get by without a closed loop, I just like the extra redundancy and control over noise, and heat. Good luck!
