Tank Modifications

Hey All,

Back with yet another question! Have any of you modded your sump to take a media basket instead of using filter socks?

I have a Reefer 170 and have now opted out completely of using the filter sock. After many attempts of trying to save all the amphipods that got stuck in there, I just couldn't bear the thought of all them dying because they went down the overflow and got trapped...I know this may sound stupid; they're basically fish food anyway. But still if I could avoid the unnecessary deaths and leave nature to do it's thing, I'd rather take that road.

I was trying to think of a good way to incorporate a media basket with various sizes of filter floss, but with enough gaps that the little guys could squirm their way through, and then any smaller particulate would be handled by the protein skimmer.

Any ideas on how this could be done or anyone attempt and been successful/unsuccessful?

Thanks!

Zach

They would not swim thru . they will stick around to eat the stuff caught by the material...

Sorry..

But you could create a acrylic basket easily . I have a settling area in my sump for the detritus to settle then a vacuum it out once a week

Good point. At the very least I'd imagine it would be easier to clean them out of filter floss than a filter sock. And if they hang on for dear life, they'd make it back in to the tank should I reuse the filter floss. I'd love to see pictures of your acrylic basket, sounds like an interesting idea.

appreciate the response!
