Is this it?

http://www.petstore.com/ps_viewitem...&utm_content=pscsegglPURA Filtration Pad 710 (7.5%20inch%20x%2010.5%20inch)&utm_campaign=pscseggl

(LINK DOES WORK!)

Personally, it sounds like mubo-jumbo. I'm no chemist, and I have no idea what Beta Ferric Oxide Hydroxide, Alpha-Ferric Hydroxides etc are.

Does it do as advertised? (Phosphates, Organics, Toxins, Ammonia, Heavy Metals, Particulates)

What about DFS version? IT also includes carbon as well. PLUS I have a $40 credit with them. I've done a little research and it seems both are well used and liked.

Ive tried all kinds this is what worked for me the best by a large margin compared,Phosban,& RoaPhos.

What about the cloudy water?

Have you tried bumping CA recently? If so how much?I was thinking Calcium precipitation.

Huh. Never seen that. It looks similar to the BRS stuff:

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Carbon-and-Phosphate-Remover-GFO-Phosphate-Remover-(GFO)-Granular-GFO/c109_8_87/p350/1-pound-(453-Grams)-Granular-Ferric-Oxide/product_info.html

(Just copy whole link ^ )

Per the MD site on the PURA Filtration Pad:

"PURA PhosLock removes 45% more phosphates than Alumina media, and 20% more than Alpha-Ferric Hydroxides. Unlike Alumina, PhosLock never leaches phosphates back to the aquarium. Unlike competing Alpha-Ferric Hydroxides, PhosLock never disintegrates and never turns soft and muddy in aquarium water. PhosLock comes fully activated right out of the jar. PhosLock does not need a specialized reactor and can be easily confined and implemented in a fine meshed media bag."

I don't know if they are just explaining a product they sell, or if it's "included" in the PURA Filtration Pad, itself. Any idea?

Does PURA have a website with all their products on it? I'm not finding it, if there is.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the PURA Filtration Pad, has the PURA Phoslock embedded in it.

I will call MD on Monday to find out for sure. A filtration pad would be more convenient than filling a media bag every so often, and I would suppose would be more effective in my system.

I just place the media bag with GFO in the 2nd chamber of my "sump" that Oceanic calls it.. With the pad, then I can place it after chamber 1 and after chamber 2, so more water filters through the pad, thus making it more effective, wouldn't you think?

I was thinking of a small HOB filter and taking out everything and just adding GFO/carbon in there... but a pad would save me even more money.

Hmmm..

Yeah. I just don't think a huge reactor would be necessary on a 14g.

Thanks for everyones help. Here is my plan.

1. Going to leave the skimmer on to export nutrients
2. Going to start vodka dosing

I have about 100 net gal. so I am going to start the inital dose of .4ml / day.

Ill check the po4 after 3 days and if it doesnt go down I will double that to .8ml

I also took out my filter socks as I think they were nitrate traps. I just dont have the time to keep cleaning and replacing them once a day.

Ill keep everyone posted. wish me luck

I hear that cleaning the substrate is important. Does anybody think that clean substrate is important in an aquarium?

Really depends on the type/depth of the sandbed. If using a shallow (( 1-3 inches )) sandbed, then "gravel vacuuming" the sandbed is a personal choice, but can work. I vac the sandbed ( 2-3 inches ) with each weekly water change on each of my 3 tanks. However, if you have a deep sandbed, it should NOT be vacuumed.

WaterssretaW --- you may want to try running some GFO before trying vodka dosing, vodka has some risks. It is a lot easier to over dose vodka compared to using a GFO.

Thank you, but I can't take the cruet because its not mine. It is my favorite fish though. I do plan on getting 1 when I upgrade next. I was actually looking at 1 at the LFS yesterday. It was just past the juvenile stage, but was still gorgeous. Luckily they get them every so often so I won't have to get it on-line.

I have used the PURA pads before and they are good. I use Bulk Reef Supply high capacity in a phosban reactor now and absolutely love it. Before that I used ROWAphos, which worked well, but the BRS HC works much better. And it is practically dustless. I would have to rinse about 3-4 gallons through the ROWAphos to get it clean. But the BRS HC takes less than 1 gallon to be clean. And it works fantastic, My PO4 was 0.1 before I started using it and it went to 0.05 per Salifert kit in a week. After 1.5 months of use my PO4 is undetectable using a Salifert kit.

I see.

I was thinking that all rock work and decoration along with sand counted as substrate.

So does it mean that the biomass (organic solids) that enter or are generated within the system have little effect?

I think it may be very silly to allow toxins to build up within an aquarium system. I'll avoid toxins building up with great enthusiasm. Am I making a mistake?

Intially, your filter socks will likely be dirty as heck if they are collecting/grabbing onto particles in the water, however once you get your tank under control, you can go several days without cleaning them. And finally, when the tank is totally under control, you can likely go a week + without cleaning.

Right now, I am cleaning mine every 3-4 days.

iFisch: Do you just go by the coloration of the sock? I guess my sock is getting black fast because I have a bacterial bloom?
