Tank O Tang's 40B

tank o tang

Thread Lurker
Sorry, but I'm not the stop while I'm in the middle of working and take pics type of person. Tank is a 40 gal breeder. Return pump is a Mag 5. Alot of equipment still has to be purchased for this tank (light, skimmer, fuge light, powerheads). Stand is a 2x4 build skinned with 1/2 osb and painted black outside and white inside. Tank is still cloudy.

For drainage I opened up the hole from 1" to an 1-1/2. Built an overflow from 1-1/2" 90° elbow and a 2" to 3" pvc adapter. Hacked a little off both sides of the adapter and a little off one side of the elbow. Sanded out the 2" side of the adapter so my elbow would slide all the way in. Cut slots with a rotozip in the 3" side then opened them up with a file. Inserted the elbow inside the adapter and used multipule coats of pvc glue. Water drains through the bulkhead, down a vertical tee and into the sump. Due to I'm waiting for my 20gal tank I lent out to be returned (plan on baffling it up for a sump), I am using a 4 chamber acrylic sump that was promised to my daughter (She's not happy about that) for when I drill her tank. Return is a Mag 5 using 3/4 pvc up the back and over the top. At the moment I am using a piece of crushed pvc for the return nozzle unill I can dress it up with some loc line.

Built a rock wall using eggcreate, dry rock, and 30lb test fishing line. Came out better than I had expected with my main goal was no use of foam or epoxy. Bottom is held in place with the eggcreate being inserted into another piece of eggcreate that is on the bottom. Top held in place by a maxi jet powerhead clip. All rock was laced with the fishing line on its backside then arranged on the eggcreate to leave minimal space in between. With the eggcreate flat I hung it over a table a tied the rock to the underside. After it was tied I put a drop of krazy glue on each knot.

Still have to arrange the the other rockwork as they were just put there to hold the eggcreate down while filling with water. Tank will run with ro/di for 2 weeks to rinse the rock and sand then will be changed over to salt.

Futue plans incude a canopy (hopefully by this weekend) with retro fit 250watt MH, need to find a skimmer and also need a pc4 to link it into my rke.

One pic w/ flash and one w/o.

Nice you did do alot of work since I stoped by 2 days ago....I can see the pvc overflow with the slots in it how's that working good..? What light is on iy now..? I'll havr to stop over sat. or sun and check it out talk to you later Brian

Looks good pal! I like the wall too! Clearly a great way to open up a tank that does not have a lot of front-2-back depth. What corals are going on that wall? Need some GSP? ;)

So if I inferred this correctly, you re-drilled the bulkhead whole in the back glass from 1" to 1.5". Wow. I'd have thought that would be tough to do. Or maybe it is and you're just GOOD. That also implies that you've got a glass bit. Hmmmm.... maybe a good friend to have. :)

Looks great! Thanks for sharin'. Lookin' forward to corals and fish!

Thanks for the kind words. Light for know is just a strip light I had around till I get the canopy built and a MH (maybe led) over the tank. Purpose of this tank will be for growing out coral and keeping my favorites in. Tank will only be seeing 2 maybe 3 very small fish. GSP ohh whats that - :blown:

Update:

The 40b is almost done. Here is a system overview. Stand is a 2x4 build that I reskinned with stain grade ply due to osb I used 1st was garbage and started to seperate. Stand and canoy are an all in one so the canopy dosen't rest on my tank and it hides all plumbing since this tank is drilled in the back. Lighting is a 250watt mogul XM 20k MH in a coralvue reflector on an icecap ballast. There are 2 little 2 light moonlight led pods for moonlight and 2 4" cpu fans for cooling. In tank are 2 vortec mp10's for flow and about 75lbs of rock including the rear rock wall. Down in the sump is a 200watt stealth heater, 3 spotlight led pods for fuge light (from home depot), mag 5 return, 1 tlf phosban reactor for carbon, 1 tlf reactor for gfo(installed but not running yet), mangroves (getting relocated soon), cheato, and a reef octopus recirc 110 skimmer (which a am waiting for ups to deliver my gate valve so I can mod it before finish installing it). Tank is run by a reefkeeper lite. Livestock includes a variety of snails and 2 b&w clowns.

Nice and clean setup. Can't wait to see this in person. Stand looks great too! Will need to get your assistance whenever I decide to replace the one I have, or upgrade!

Thats so nice glad it's done lloks great jeff the stand looks good and the top came out nice. So is it ready for some corals yet...?? I got some for you when your ready I'll have to stop by this weekend haven't hung out and BS in a while see you soon later Brian....

Thanks for the kind words. I am very happy with the way this tank came out. Tank is not ready for corals yet, I just got a bunch of rock this weekend and have to give time for everything to balance out. Although I won a piece of purple cap at our last meeting and put half of it in here. It still looks great and color is awsome. Just let me know when you want to stop by.

hey Jeff, Superb job. This tank looks wonderful. I love the finish on the stand, the molding adds a nice touch. Looking forward to seeing it full of corals.

I agree. The color is still going strong under my 10ks. I am not sure that it is a cap tho. I've never see a cap grow the way it was in the Westport Aquarium tank. Irregardless, it is very nice.

Tank a and stand looks great pal. You are an animal with wood! Wish I could do that...

So you've got TWO MP10's. How's that working out? And what type of flow mode are you using?

And it looks like you've got some CPU fans in the sump too, for cooling. Is that right?

And that stand looks like it's got a LOT of room. Is that all under the 40?

Thanks for the pics. Love that stand.

Thanks guys. Mp10's are working out great, 1 just wasn't enough. I run them on reef crest at about 90%. Just the right amount of flow imo. In the sump those are the led pods I got at home depot to light the fuge. Yes, its all under the 40b. I built the stand 25" deep for 2 reasons: 1) so I can fit my 24" sump from front to back and give me enough room under there for all the other stuff, and 2) since I drilled the tank in the rear panel I wanted to hide all the plumbing, wires from the side view.

Well I am thinking of getting rid of the 40b to upgrade to a 75g I picked up. If anyone is interested I am only looking to recoupe the money I spent building the stand/canopy. I've got $350 into material for the stand/canopy and another $100 into the aluminum light rack. NOT LOOKING TO SELL ANY EQUIPTMENT. This is for stand/canopy/light rack (not reflector). Tank is also available to buyer. I am more than willing to provide you with the material list if interested.

Wasn't planning on a 75g finding its way into my basement. But I do have to sell this one for my wife to not complain about setting up the 75. Even after I set up the 75 I can't promise it would stay if I found a 120. But it would have to stop there as I can't go more than 4ft.

LOL.. jeff you crack me up all that hard work and bamm to a 75 gal. well it will be nice... That stand and canopy is really nice I seen it being built.. we'll see you at the meeting been 2 months so look foward to seeing all you again..Brian
