Tank of the Month - November '04

Man, THat's some tank. You made my mind up to go hard core SPS. Love the colours.
Question, What is the advantage of a Kwalk reactor over a kwalk via a dosing pump? About to purchase a dosing pump and would love to hear any opinions on the effects of each.

again WOW...

I'd hate to know what your electricity bill is. I wish I could get that past the wife....]#

Congratulations Kevin. Truly a beautiful reef. It's grown magnificently with the frags you first put in. I've really enjoyed watching it mature over the years. Just stunning!

hats off to you kevin !!

since no one has asked, what is that crazy green acro that is at the top left tank? i want a frag, seriously pm me if you want to sell a frag(s).

great tank

First of all let me thank everyone again for all the congrats!

Second I certainly don't mind questions but I would rather have them asked here rather than PM's for a couple of reasons:

1. Others may have asked the same question and I will only have to answer once.
2. Maybe the information can be used by others but didn't want to ask.

Can you explain your lighting schedule to us?
It just provides a dawn to dusk schedule.

I was surprised that you have two skimmers running.
I test different types and sizes of skimmers. I have one of the skimmers set up outside the tank and a pump which I can quickly change. It is interesting to compare different types of skimmers. For example a downdraft and a beckett. They each produce a slightly different type of skimmate. I don't know the significance of this but it's food for thought.

How are you cleaning those edges? It looks tough!

It is! I use a credit card. My future tank(s) will be a maximum of 30" deep rather than 33.5" :) I'm going to try and acrylic scrapper (12" long) made from a scrap piece of acrylic.

Hi Michael,

Questions: It appears that you prefer to let your corals just 'battle it out' regarding space.

At first I tried to move the corals around to try and create more space between them but sometimes they would encrust on the surrounding rock and over time there were corals popping up everywhere. Also a couple of the larger fish have a tendency to be rather clumsy and snap branches off on a regular basis. These fall into the rockwork unnoticed and encrust and begin to grow. At about the 30 month mark I gave up chopping and chiseling them apart. I cut 1,760 frags from the tank last year but it doesn't seem to have much affect.

I only had cyano bacteria form on the sand at about month 4 and it lasted about 3 weeks. I have never seen any since. Most often I just see a white line where the corals meet. Sometimes the dominant coral will encrust around a branch of an adjoining coral about 2" and then will stop and start growing out branches from the encrusted area. I theorize that it is more productive for it to grow branches than to keep fighting the coral.

I have just added a couple of Tunze streams but just to try to increase the overall flow. The big stags are very efficient at reducing water flow.

Regards,
Kevin

Very Nice, Your tank is an inspiration to keep me going.
Those growth pictures are amazing. Thank you for including that in your TOTM feature. Not only are they beautiful to look at, they are a very informative way of understanding what we can expect from our corals if we give them the best possible care.

Congratulations on a job well done.

Kevin,

Your tank was much of the inspiration behind my current tank. I asked you questions about it a couple years ago and printed out your reply and saved it for reference when designing my tank.

I loved your tank then and nothing has changed.

I was very suprised to see the Blueface, awesome fish.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Mike

what is that crazy green acro that is at the top left tank?
That coral was one of my first Acropora corals. It is A. yongei. I believe it came out of the Solomon Islands. Here is a picture of the parent colony from 1999 when it was in my 90 gal tank under a 175W halide. It maintains its color under a very wide variety of lighting and grows up to 1.5" a month. The piece you are asking about was a 3" frag I cut off sometime in '99 which is now 18" tall or so :)

Regards,
Kevin

wow!

wow!

OMG...the best TOTM I have seen yet! Congrats! BTW...have you tried the extra long Kent Pro Scraper with the acrylic blade? I have seen some others even extend the handle even further so they can reach the bottom of their deep tanks...just an idea.

Once again...congrats! Very inspiring!!!

sweet tank

sweet tank

I could just look forever.

Question: I was wondering how the piping under the tank was set up. what connects to what, and for your refugeum did you make your own or buy on and just filled it.

Congrats Kevinpo!

Beautifull tank

Question: I understand from the article that you travel a lot, how do you keep your livestock fed while you are away?

Amazing and somewhat daunting--this is what dreams are made of. Congrats.
I am also interested in how you feed your tank while you are away.

I am impresed with your tank. Could you tell me if this is a glass or an acrylic tank? How much cash did this bad buy cost you? and what would you do different if you had to do it again?

It is! I use a credit card. My future tank(s) will be a maximum of 30" deep rather than 33.5" I'm going to try and acrylic scrapper (12" long) made from a scrap piece of acrylic.

The lfs down here in san diego uses a long rectangular cutout of 3/4" acrylic (imagine a big ruler) to get their coralline off the bottom of their display tank. It works very well from what i can tell.
