Tank On Wheels

I am setting up a 150gallon reef (48 x 24x36) I will eventually be remodeling in the room where the tank will be. Has anyone tried to use heavy duty casters.

I'd be afraid. What if someone fell against it or somthing? I'm sure moving that much water would be a bad thing for the glass.

I have a 50 that I got with a stand built on an old furniture dolly. It holds up fine and I can move it around a bit on carpet even. It's made of acrylic though.....and is 100g lighter. Even just the 50 stocked is hard to move, I bet a 150 would be impossible.

Could you imagine if one of the wheels broke and threw the thing off level? Yikes!

I've seen it, with a 150 no less. The guy's tank was in an apartment building on parquet flooring but under that it's cement so I don't know.
What kind of flooring are you on?

Don't even try it. Those casters aren't made for that kind of weight. And how would you manage to get them even and level? I think it's a really bad idea! So many things can go wrong!

agreed. Just way to many things can go wrong with that setup.

i agree it is a bad idea but if it is a must i would build the tank out of metal and you can get hevey duty wheels at hd but they are like $40 a wheel and are rated for 300 lbs so im not sure if that is even enough

i wouldnt buy casters from hd or lowes id get them from grianger or msc the ones i use at work can support over 1000# apiece and there only 5 inches but it will deffently be hard just be very paitciant when doin it

I have seen a 300 gallon made by tenecor on castors but I dont know if it was ment to be moved with water in it or only when empty. I would go with granger's castors like tbone said.

Well lets think of it this way:

150g of water weighs roughly 1200lbs.

a 150g glass tank weighs, oh say 150lbs

then you'll probably get 300 lbs of sand maybe, and 150 - 200 lbs of live rock.

Add in there a hood made of wood with lights installed, maybe 75lbs.

Add these up and we're near 2000lbs! You really want to trust all of that weight on some wheels? Not to mention the stand is terribly top-heavy.

I would defenatly not put it in wheels, i would be scared that 150 gallons would find its way onto my floor.

Be better off getting a 150 Gallon Rubber maid VAT to move the live stock to when it was time to move the tank...

No way in the world Id trust myself mounting and keeping Casters level enough to keep from twisting or tweaking the tank frame and watching it pop..

I was thinking of doing 6 or more heavy duty casters. I would never move the tank full but when I decided to redo my flooring I would simply lower the water level as low as I could and just temporarily move it to another room with every intention of putting it back where it was. I succesfully moved my 125 gallon sps tank into the kitchen to put flooring in my livingroom. I used those slider gimicks that you see on tv. I had a tough time but it worked.
