I messed up and bought a stand off craiglist. The top part is like 22 5/8 width by 15.3. I have a IM Fusion 20 was wondering if its overhanging by 1/2 inch ok?

I'm gonna say no, not a good idea. If the tank has a frame on the bottom, the weight is carried through the four corners and none of the corners should be overhanging the stand. If it's a rimless tank, it needs to be supported underneath with nothing hanging over. It might be possible to have a sheet of plywood cut that matches the size of the tank. Then you can sit the tank on top of that with the stand underneath it. I don't think you would want to do that for a really large tank, but it might be ok for a 20 gallon.

Definitely wouldn’t do that. You can cut a piece of 3/4 plywood the right size and put it over the stand. Then, if you care how it looks, paint or stain to match.

Almost anything you do will be ugly unless you are a master carpenter, which I am not. I would sell that and get a stand that is the proper size.

A 20 will sit fine on that if the ends overhang. Had a 35 hex that stuck out for a decade and never had issue

Put a piece of plywood cut to tank size if your worried

Why cant you just extended the back of the stand. Your tank can sit flush to the front of the stand and the aesthetics wont be compromised.

Is that a stand designed for an aquarium or just a standard cabinet? If the latter, make sure that it can handle the weight. I put a tank on a bedroom side table many years ago and popped the bottom panel because the thing sagged.

^Correct! But as opposed to checking if it can handle the wight of the aquarium, I would go ahead and just beefing up from the inside of the cabinet now regardless.

You should either glue or screw the added on piece of plywood to the stand. Unless the stand is very flimsy it will not need extra support, you are only dealing with a 20 gallon tank.

FWIW, Elos and Red Sea Reefer tanks overhang their stand.
but it depends on the thickness of the bottom glass though.
You can always call IM and ask.
