The tank is doing ok.Montipora caps and Digis are still RTNing :mad2:

And some of the LPSs are not so hot.

So i'm still doing big water changes and trying not to get too P.O. :mad2:

ed, sorry to hear the stonies are still headin' downhill :(. based on your pics and the size of some of them leathers and sinu's, i'd say you've got some serious chemical warfare taking place...

just my .02.

It is from a very hardy digi strain. It has made it through 2 crashes when all the other digis were lost. Glad it is doing well.

Ed, sorry to hear you are still having issues. BTW - what is the large dead skeleton on P7210010 behind the green blastos? I have had hell of a time with digis in my mixed reef system - most everything else does well, but I lose digis all the time. The exception seems to be the piece I got from Justin.

It was an open Brain that mysteriously died.

Toxic poisoning form the leathers?

Until recently the Caps & Digis where fine growing super fast and really brightly colored. Then all of a sudden BAM RTN and in less than 3 weeks all Monti digis and caps gone!

Now that the Montis are gone some of the LPS are suffering?

I've upped the carbon and am doing 30g water changes 2x a week to see if I can reduce the levels of toxin form the leathers.I think i need to make a decision-Leathers or Hard corals.

Have you inspected all the caps and digis for monti eating nudibranchs? Even moreso if you noticed caps dying first.

It can be hard if you dont know what to look for or how small they can be, and the best time for viewing is when lights have been off for a good couple of hours and they come up from hiding under caps and nooks and crannies.

Mike: If your talking about that yellowy tan one, that guy is a toughy :) He was raised amongst leathers...Maybe built an immune, or slightly higher tolerance?

Although it could be just the diverse amount of leathers you have in there. Kudos on an extensive collection. If it were me, Id stick with the leathers. All save for the skeleton, your LPS actually look very good in the picture, and man! That bubble is downright bad @zz! Perfect location for him to thrive and be showcased too! And the goniopora look great! Especially for such a currently elusive coral.

Great tank Ed thanks for sharing!

Look close @ the last pic the Hydnaphora on the right is starting to die off in the center. It's slowly dieing from the center out it has slowed down alot but if it keeps up I'm going to have to frag it up and ask you guys to hold frags for me til i can figure out whats up.

ED,

Sorry to hear about the struggles withy our tank, I have seen it several times and it is a top notch set-up.

I would keep the Leathers also if i were you.

I'm going to run huge quantities of Kent carbon in an old Fluval 203 and hope that pulls out the toxins. I’ll also have to start dosing trace elements to make up what the carbon in pulling out.Untill about 4mo ago I ran carbon 24/7 but I stopped to see if I could save some $$$.I started running it 3 days a month just to take the color out of the water. I believe that is when the toxins started to build up and 3-4 weeks ago it built to levels high enough to kill Montipora’s.

So my advice is if you want to have Sarcophyton, Lobophylla and/or Sinularia with your SPS run carbon all the time. Also test your Iodine once a week and dose trace as needed.

Thanks Ed Simmons

24/7 is always the best choice when mixing SPS w/ leathers, I would recommend it regardless. Though Sinularia and Sarcophytons are known to be the highest to exude terpines into the water column and wage allopathy on any would be encroachers.
I hope I never gave the wrong impression that carbon should be used for a only a couple days, on the last thread that got kinda ugly and the topic easily misunderstood amongst all the poo poo flinging.
I think it takes the carbon a long time before it starts to effect trace elements, unless your keeping your water for more than a month or two, through your testing you may find that supplementing might not be necessary, especially with your weekly waterchanges. Having so many leathers and xenia and a few clams might be where your iodine is getting sucked up if you already notice it's depletion a little higher than you may have before.

At any rate your doin better with them than I ever did mixing them. Tried breifly on my 30g a while back and they within days started to fade poor polyp extension etc, I had a 175MH on them so I shouldve been able to at least keep healthy brown sps, nope. I think it was the leathers, and the occasionaly film they sluff off definately doesnt help either.

There some tanks and keepers that can pull it off though, and everything I've heard more often than not is contributed to constant carbon usage. Look forward to hearing your findings :)
