tank pricing question

Not sure if this is the correct forum but i know there is alot of traffic so here goes. I found a 10 month old 300g DD for sale today I was wondering what a fair market price for this tank should be i live in a small town and most people here have cattle ponds not saltwater aquariums :headwalls: so it is a 2hr drive when i happen to find used equipment but dont want to pull the trigger and be ripped off by the way the tank comes with the stand and canopy if this helps

IMO i would never buy a used tank. reason being is it might not have been taken care of ie: properly shimmed in the past, what was used in the tank before they decided to sell it, excessive wear and tear, etc. etc. the list goes on with me. do your self a favor and buy a brand new tank. id hate to see you drive 4 hrs and set the tank up and a few months or worse a few days later you come home to 300 gallons of salt water on your living room floor. save your self from a potential hazard and buy new. id rather pay the extra money for a new tank then save a few hundred dollars on a used tank and then later spend thousands of dollars replacing what ever water damage takes place. just avoid this and buy a new tank. im a firm believer of "you get what you pay for."

I would say somewhere between 500 and a 1000. Maybe more if it comes with extras.
Like scarface says you do take your chances. Maybe a happy medium would be to resell the tank and use the stand canopy and other equipment. I have two used tanks. One has some scratches that drive me crazy.

And IMHO I'd never buy a new tank! Why pay $1000 when you can buy used for $250-400? I have a very, very used 180g that sat in a shed for years. It's been up and running for 18 mths, no issues at all. I have had 9 or 10 tanks for various reasons over the past 7 years. I never bought one new and I've never had a problem with one that I didn't create myself. Save your money and look for a good used tank. The 300g you are looking at may be just the ticket. BTW, I paid $200 for my 180g with no stand or canopy.

i say if its only the tank with no stand, canopy, lights, etc. used $1.00 per gallon...my little rule of thumb. $300 would be a fair price ..$250 would be a deal

unless its Acrylic??? dont know the resale or the new value of the plastic tanks....what is he expecting to get for the 300 gallon tank?

X2, if it is only the tank. If its drilled, has a nice stand and sump, around a thousand. The more equpment the more money.

The tank is a marineland deep dimension 300g 72x36x27 dual overflows with stand and canopy was setup 10 months ago for a lady as a full blown reef she had money like water and parted out all equipment she never bought frags only colonies and never bought anything but show size fish she lived alone and passed away the tank is being sold empty by the executor of the estate i have seen all the fish they were given to an lfs unfortumately they will probably die there they are huge but healthy for now but they are a different route than i would like to go i like lots of little fish and corals but thats just me but i am pretty sure a used DD will go for more than a dollar a gallon i sell small tanks like this all the time but this is a different monster so to speak

I wouldn't say $300 for a 300g tank would be a fair deal, it would be basically free:) I've been quoted $1600 for a 100g tank. I would say for a Marineland 300g with canopy and stand, a $1200 tag would be a good deal. The tank itself NIB costs $2000

if this is being sold by an executor, I'm sure you can steal it. They want it gone fast and it seems like a town where there wont be many people jumping to take it. I'd offer $300 and then negotiate from there. Who knows what they value the tank at.

Used tanks, usually go for $1 gal....MORE if starfire, rimless, RR, etc....

300DD is a nice tank, if there are no problems/scratches/etc...it should be ~$500...but don't lose it for a few hundred more!

Just chiming in on the new vs used opinions. I bought a used 180. Spent $950 the seller threw in EVERYTHING. Tank (reef ready), Stand (crappy & replaced), new Reeflow Dart pump, Skimmer, RO unit, 4 Bulb T5VHO fixture, MH lighting with a box full of bulbs, Sump, 150+ lbs of Live Rock, 100 lbs Live Sand, Two 44 gallon Brutes, Some corals (went to my Uncle), about 8 fish with a total value of ~$800, nets, food. Was very happy to let the seller spend the ~$2000 in stuff I didnt need to :) tank has been up and running about 14 months. Been enjoying my purchase every day.

+1 on a $1 per gallon for a used tank. Or $2 per gallon if it comes with a stand and sump. Although the stands are usually not in good shape and have to be refinished or replaced. Make sure it holds water, is level and you can live with any scratches. I have bought 2 used tanks and its the scratches that bother me the most over time.

I think i am missing where all these 300 - 600 dollar tanks are i cant imagine buying 3/4 glass sheets to build it myself for these prices maybe i should keep browsing the used forums for these deals cause i have sold lots of smaller tanks for 1-gal BTW this tank has zero scratches also the executor is a hobbyist as well and has no intention of letting this tank go that cheap he has the 250g version and has contemplated setting this up as a predator fowlr

it's all about what is it worth$$$$$to me ,do you have to have it now???if so your gonna pay more,if not then set back give it a little Texas patiance, then you will see the deals that pop up when people croak or have to break down there stuff cause they lost a job got a divorce ,etc...$1.00/gall +$10.00 for each over flow, if you pay more than that then you really have to have it right away ....i get it i just dont like people getting ripped off......THE HELL WITH RETAIL

i agree with the texas patience i just did an upgrade dec 4th but this is a sweet deal to me and i live so far from anything 5-6 hours from large populations it is hard to get good deals used i do not need this tank however this hobby is a constant upgrade always relegating the last upgrade to a frag tank or a turtle tank for the kids lol and at some point i would like to do a final upgrade not that there is such an animal to me the final is when the wife says ok you gotta go and take the pool with you so i will sit on the fence for a bit and see what happens
