Tank problems...

Ok, I did a water change Friday afternoon. About 20 gallons as always. Added a 5 gallon bucket of Kalk Friday night. Yesterday, some of my zoos didn't open up. Now Another set is turning from dark brown to yellow. All my digitoda is turning from a burnt orange to a pink. So is my lobo. My star polyp aren't open at all. Rycordia is turning lighter too. Any ideas???

Lights maybe??? Out of color spectrum or something. I have had them for less than a year.

I have had a problem with low PH as of late. 7.8 in the evenings up to 8.1 in the afternoon.

Calcium-390
Alk.-12-14
PH- 8.0
Mag-1350

5 gallon is WAY to much kalk to add at one time. How are you adding it? Are you dripping it or just dumping it in?

im sure your alk and ph spiked way to high again. even if you test the next day and things looked fine the sudden spike could have already done the damage. and alk at 12-14 is twice as high as it should be

I agree with what these guys have already said. In the past I have "slowly dripped" 3 or 4 gallons of Kalk water in my tank and it didn't hurt it at all. Although if you are pouring it in that will cause a major PH spike as Chad pointed out. As far as the Alk reading, if that is KH instead of Alk, then you are okay.

My recommendation, in the future, don't do a large water change and drip 5 gallons of any chemical into a tank the same night. That's too many changes to your "stable" environment. It is too much stress on the corals as well as your fish.

Just my thoughts.

Well, I dosed it over the whole night. But I do think I have been trying to hard to get my PH up. Adding 8.3 Buffer. Then Epsom salt for Magnesium along with Tech-M. But I only added enough Tech-M to raise it 200 PPM. I guess I will just wait and hope everything works out.

But I swear it looks like just too much light. I did up the light by an extra hour this past week. Still only 6 hours a day though for the MH.

I have 2 400 watt XM MHs. 4 36 inch actinics.

Now that I think about it, the zoos and stuff were closed when I came home and only the actinics were on. So I don't think it is the lights now. I just really think I shocked everything with all the stuff I was adding in one day.

Lessons learned I guess.

Don't worry so much about test results. Look at your tank, it will tell you if things are ok. From the look of your corals at the last meeting, everything in your tank is doing well. I think constant jiggling of the water parameters causes more harm than good.

I agree now and thanks for all the input.

But in the future I do really want to try the Farley Magflake and Dowflake recipe for daily dosages. But I will give the tank time to bounce back for a while.

hey there is this professional aquarium maintenance company in town, maybe you should try them out and see if they are any good. I forget the name of it!:D
