tank purchase

Hopefully next week I will be getting my new tank. I was originally going to order a perfecto 70 gallon cube (30"l x 30" w x 18"h) it is going to run me around $310. But I have been thinking I can get a used 75 gal for dirrt cheap and a new one for about $150. So now I am not sure... I like the deminsions of the perfecto but will it be awkward? I am a little indecisive on this one so I am looking for some feedback. My wife really wants a tang and I know these tanks are on the small end but wich would be a better fit for larger fish?

personally, if you're looking at the 75, why not just go up to a 90? they have the same footprint the 90 is just taller. you can find them pretty cheap as well, and if you go for a used one, you could probably find a 90rr for the same as a new 75. as far as which would be better for the tang, I'd vote for the longer tank, as it will give more distance for it to swim. just my opinion on that one though, nothing scientific to back it up. good luck in whichever direction you decide to go.

The depth is very nice in a reef. I would agree go with the larger tank for a tang. Another option is a stock 120 or 150. You get the length and depth.

I'm a huge fan of the look of the cube. I would probably go to for the cube personally, but agree with the others for the health of the tang.

Decided on the standard 75 gallon should. Start a build thread soon.

75 is a Great choice, nice price point getting in and decent used lighting system is easy to find.
And when or if you go to a larger display tank, the 75 can make a great frag growout system.

How's the TOTM and reef chemistry research coming along?

It is a great reference... and that chemistry link is amazing thanks... here is what I am going with
75 drilled
2x250 watt luminarc pushed by a dual galaxy or blue wave haven't decided yet
Probablly gonna run reeflux 12k's
As for the skimmer its looking like an asm g3 ( found a used one at a great price) but still considering a new swc xtreme 160 cone .
Still trying to talk my wife into a vortek mp20 but she's standing her ground...lol if not pry do a couple of k4's until I can get a mp20.
and I plan on adding a doser to the setup eventually but can't afford it just yet pry an aquamedic?

I think the reeflux 12K's are better driven by electronic ballasts so maybe the galaxy might be better. Double check, but if I recall the reeflux run on anything other than electronic would void the warranty on the bulb if you had problems.

A 75 is small enough that Bionic 2 part manual is really not that big of a deal until you can anty up the cash for the medic dosers.

Sounds like you're off to a very productive start. Keep reading. ;)

FYI >>> An MP20 vortech is not anywhere near enough for a 75.
I run an MP40, and I need to run a K3 on the opposite side.
How big is your sump? ASM G3 is pretty beefy. make sure you have room
