tank raised fish

has anyone ever wondered why are tank raised fish more expensive than wild caught. you would think that with the reefs being in trouble that companies would make it so tank raised would be financialy appealing as well as morally especially with law proposals like the yellow tang restrictions I've been reading about. it just makes sense. I realize that in order to produce tank raised you must start with adults then the babies and that requires housing and care for both. it just seems odd to me anyone else feel the same way

I think with a tank bred fish your not taking as many chances of disease and death vs a wild caught fish IMO. I also know that some fish are nearly impossible to breed in captivity.

true, but since most places offer a 14 day or so guarantee wouldn't that even the playing field so to speak if I have two fish same species same size

Most places? Not where Im from.The guarantee ends after you leave the store.

most places being online such as liveaquaria.com, petsolutions.com, saltwaterfish.com ...

I have yet to find a quality pet store or a pet store that even carries saltwater supplies where I live so I am at the mercy of online sources for the time being

Retail tank raised fish cost more due to limited quantity, higher demand and rearing costs. If you can cut out the middle man and find a breeder that will sell direct they can be pretty compentitive price wise especially when you consider that the survival rate is much higher. I actually think they are financially appealing already due to this. The few I have purchased seemed to deal with all the handling and quarantine much better than wild caught.
