i am new to the hobby and am currently shopping for tank, etc. we have come across a tank that sounds like a good deal but it has a couple small scratches on the back inside from moving the rock (the seller tells us). is there any concerns with the scratches? it is a 200 gal tank with thick glass. please advise!

Most likely you would not be able to see the scratches once the tank is filled with water. However, you may see the scratch one the algea appeared. If it is a good deal, 15% less than selling price, I go for it.

Good luck and enjoy the hobby!

If the scratches are on the back side, I would not worry about it. Especially if it is a good deal. Don't buy it with the idea of removing the scratches.

alot of people, including me, paint the outside, back of the tank either black, or dark blue. Especially if it is going against a wall. It adds the illusion of depth to the tank. I painted mine dark blue and it looks great and would help hide the scratch.

Coraline algae is the bondo of the reef world, It filled in all the scratches on the back of my tank. Now you can't tell they were ever there.

I wouldn't worry about scratches on the back. I wouldn't buy a tank with moderate scratches on the front or sides. I would consider some light ones though, as it does happen....I should know:).
